I have beaten the game twice on vanilla. I had an idea for a new run and was wondering if I could get some ideas from the audience here I was thinking of making a character (ranger or bard or thief) with average stats to run as an ordinary guy. I know this will be hard but I want it to be like an underdog sort of thing. I also want average npcs to join me, none of the powerhouses.
I also want to install some mods but I have never done so before. I would like some pointers on what I should use, I am not a powergamer so I'm not interested in any of that.
Thanks!

There are many threads here on mods, worth a search. I kept one of my old ones in my browser; you can find it here. There are some excellent opinions from a variety of members that are definitely worth reading.
If you're looking for tweaks, I'd suggest considering the Gibberlings 3 Tweak Pack. It covers a ton of options in rule changes, cosmetic, NPC, convenience and content tweaks. You can accept or reject any of these without effect to the rest, another part about this package I like.
Be sure to check out this meta list at the Pocket Plane Group. Although it isn't maintained as it should be, there's a lot of good stuff on it. Feel free to ask for an opinion on anything specific, since there are dozens to choose from. Most of us have tried at least one or two of these mods, and some of us are frankly mod crazy.
EDIT: You may also want to look at the BG Reference Crossroads and Balanced Mods sticky threads, in this forum. I wish more modders would keep the former up to date, but there's good material in there.

I'm about to start a Minimum Stats game (got the idea from the Bioware forums). I'll be using 4 self made characters with the minimum stats possible for their race and class, and seeing how I can do. I'll be starting in BG1 (tutu), so I can add the tomes, and I've boosted the minimum STR to 6 (so non-warriors can carry some stuff!).RedneckJedi wrote:I have beaten the game twice on vanilla. I'm going to go at it with this party:
Elf Sorcerer protagonist (stats don't really matter, and I'm going to try to not reload)
Half-Elf Blade (nice F/M type, the only decent chance I have at any Lore score over 0, and a 15 CHA helps in the stores)
Half-Elf Cleric/Ranger (decent tank, 14 starting WIS good for spellcasting)
Dwarf Fighter/Thief (gets bonuses to thief skills I need)
I hope I do alright. I was going to try to powergame in an Elf Ranger (Stalker or Archer) for a real "minimal power-character" but I want to stay with 4 characters. I am still waiting to wrap up my ToB game (should finish this week or next), and then I'll go for it. If I add the Ranger, it would have to be at the expense of the Blade, who's a pretty good character in this party.

klorox, thats quite an interesting idea. will you allow yourself to use stats enhancing items such as the ring of human influence or braces of dexterity?
redneckjedi, i would recommend the quest pack and unfinished business as mods that add interesting quests without having such difficult battles that you need to powergame or use cheese. i'm pretty sure both are at pocketplane which has already been linked. also, i enjoyed the G3 anniversary mod very much - try a search for gibberlings three in google for that one.

Yeah. I imagine I'll use a lot of potions in this game as well.mcgregor wrote:klorox, thats quite an interesting idea. will you allow yourself to use stats enhancing items such as the ring of human influence or braces of dexterity?

Just about any WeiDU mod that doesn't interact with the first dungeon is safe, and that's a lot: Unfinished Business, the G3 Tweak Pack, Ashes and Embers, Tower of Deception, Turnabout, Ascension, etc. That also means among NPC mods that Keto and Kelsey are okay, but since Yasraena offers to join you inside Chateau Irenicus, she isn't.RedneckJedi wrote:I have Dungeon-B-Gone installed (a great tool if you have already played a few times but I learned the hard way that you might want to free a couple of people b4 you leave...) What can I install over top of it?
