Seriously, doesn't anyone want to know why these transgentic cats where produced in the first place? The aim is actually not to produce funny pets, but to develope a simple method to select embryos in the production of transgenic animals. Whatever you might think of it, transgenic animals are very important tools in medical science. Without going into details exactly how transgenic animals are produced, it is important to know that it includes a step where embryos must be transferred to a mother, and at this point it is not possible to know which embryos carry the altered gene or not. Thus, the transfer include the unnecessary production of non-transgenic animals. The introduction of a fluorescence protein gene makes it easy to visually distinguish between the embryos. So this is actually just a technique to increase safety and efficiency in the production of transgenic animals.

On a similar note, "Brainbow" mice, mice with a brain coloured in the rainbow colours, have recently been produced. And no, they are not meant as pets for rich gay people - the researchers have stained the neurons in order to trace them, so that advanced investigations of how the brain is wired can be made.

CE, I agree with you that transgenic animals are crucial to medical science. But if we aren't careful enough, people will exploit genetic engineering and create new breeds of a certain animal that can prove dangerous towards the ecosystem. This is more than likely, considering the amount of people out there looking to make a quick buck, regardless of whose toes they step on and what harm they cause.
