Some of the people I need to talk to during quests seem to forget me by the time I get back to talking to them! For this reason, I don't know how to get ahead with certain tasks. For example (SPOILERS follow):
1. I can't access Shadow Thieves' Guild in the Docks district anymore, after having talked to Aran Linvail and Renal Bloodscalp, and having gained access to Mae'var's Guild Hall. This is so even though the guards tell me to go in, and even though I have the Shadow Thief Cellar key. (What's it used for, in any case? I'm not sure I found the right door.)
2. I did Mae'var's task of stealing the amulet from the lady from the temple of Talos, but now Gorch won't let me in anymore. Previously, I gained access by presenting a letter to him, but he took the letter from me then, and now he seems to have forgotten that I had the letter to start with. How do I get back to talking to Mae'var?
3. Gaelan Bayle keeps appearing to greet me anew--he's done it three times now, each time leaving me no option but to follow him to his house. I must be doing something wrong. I paid him for the Shadow Thieves' help: that's how I got to talking to Aran Linvail in the first place. But last time he appeared to talk to me, he just told me that yes, I have paid, and that I should use the cellar key once inside the Shadow Thieves' guild hall, so as to get to talk to Aran Linvail. But I've already talked to him! And now I can't even get back to the Guildhall! I don't know what to do.
Help!
Is there a bug that's causing this? If so, do you know what I should download to fix it? Or am I just doing something wrong?
Many thanks to anyone willing to help,
Manu.
why are people and places forgetting me? (possible SPOILERS)

A most unusual problem. Patching your game up to the latest version is always a good thing. Are you running any mods?
And I know this is a stupid question, but I have to ask. You're sure your save games are catching? It sounds more like your progress isn't recorded and you reload the same game, complete a task, then return to find you've never been given it.

Thanks for your help. I don't know whether I'm running any mods... I don't know what 'mods' refer to! I'm new.
Your question about saves catching is not stupid at all. I have had problems with crashing while saving (I'm playing the MAC version), and someone advised me to empty the cache and temp folders when that happens. So when there's a crash, I just do that and keep on playing. I can see, sort of, in my own clouded fashion, though I don't understand much about these things, how that might cause me to be on a quest that the game thinks I wasn't given... So thanks for the question -- it might be helpful. I'll try whether going back to previous saves and playing some parts again helps. But then I'm not sure what to do about the crashing problem. Is it safe to delete the contents of the cache and temp files after quitting the game?
Thanks again,
Manu.

If you don't know if you're running mods then you aren't no worries. They are like patches made by third parties to gain all sorts of specials features. Having multiple mods can sometimes result in unpredictable crashes and bugs.
I personally don't see how clearing the folders you mentioned will help, but I'm no expert either. Reloading an earlier savegame to see what happens seems like a good idea. If that doesn't work you can always reinstall. Be sure to backup your savegame folders. A BG2 installation doesn't take too long on most systems these days anyway.
Good luck
