I'm in Chapter 2 doing side quests, and I want to go to De'Arnise Hold and do the quest I got from Nalia. She's not in my party, but my journal said I could meet her there.
When I try to leave the city, the game will only let me go to Watcher's Keep. De'Arnise Hold is on the map, but not highlighted. I though Watchers Keep was a part of Tob and should be avoided until I finished SoA. Do I need to go here before I can get to the Hold?
Thanks in advance.
They turned me loose from the nervous hospital. Said I was well.
Watcher's keep is accessible in SoA, but it will make you so powerful (provided you can finish it) that the rest of SoA will be very easy.
To leave Athkatla, you need to head over to the City Gates district and leave it through the main gate. This will allow you to roam to all other locations, outside the city. I usually go to Watcher's Keep pretty early, whether to do whatever it is I have to do, or to pick up a nifty, inexpensive and very useful potion case (which is amazingly enough, a case that lets you conserve space by holding lots and lots of potions).
“The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially.”
You can select an area outside Athkatla on the World Map when you enter, then exit, the City Gates.
Watcher's Keep is a stand-alone area, and has nothing to do with anything else in BG2, except that it's accessible from both the SoA and ToB World Maps. As a rookie, I don't recommend visiting it until ToB.
Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...
If you'll recall when you played BG1, you had to go all the way to the edge of a map in order to access an adjacent area, at which point a previously unseen area might become visible and accessible. According to the game logic, you can't leave the city without going through the City Gates area.
There is also a more subtle reason for making you go through so many areas to get where you're going: when you travel between areas, there is a chance that you will have a random encounter, and I think the game wants to maximize your chance of having a few of those, especially early in the game.
Thanks everyone. Stupid me, I was trying to leave the city from the area I was in (Graveyard Dist.) then I went to the City Gates Dist. and there are 2 ways to leave it and of course I picked the wrong one.
Anyway I got it figured out.
