British men opt for 50-inch plasma over sex

Reuters

Saturday, February 09, 2008

LONDON -- Nearly half of British men surveyed would give up sex for six months in return for a 50-inch plasma TV, a survey -- perhaps unsurprisingly carried out for a firm selling televisions -- said Friday.

Electrical retailer Comet surveyed 2,000 Britons, asking them what they would give up for a large television, one of the latest consumer "must-haves."

The firm found 47 per cent of men would give up sex for half a year, compared to just over a third of women.

"It seems that size really does matter more for men than women," the firm said.

Nothing like amplifying and modernising an already existing stereotype... :p

Indeed...to somewhat corrupt an old phrase:
The only difference between men and boys is the size of their toys.... :p

Hmmm... I wonder if any of this has to do with the release of Mass Effect??? :D

I wonder if they would still agree if no sex also included not being allowed to boil their own noodle.

What would 47% of men want a 50-inch plasma TV for, if not to watch *ahem* European arthouse movies?

I can't help but wonder how much that 47% are getting anyway...

That was pretty much my thought too... :D

You know...if these stereotypes regarding the British and sex have any validity at all...it's a wonder they ever managed to procreate in sufficient enough numbers to colonise a significant chunk of the globe... :p

For a 50 inch plasma screen, I'd give it up for an entire year.

So what would British women trade sex away for? Nothing in the area of 50 inch I hope. :)

I have no idea what these people are thinking. It would take at least a Gibson Les Paul to make me embrace celibacy.

Oh hell no, screw the Les Paul, Fender Stratosphere's bring like a hundred times more class and precision to the ambiance.

They want TV, let them have it. Same goes for sex or whatever they fancy. I don't give a damn one way or the other. :p
''They say truth is the first casualty of war. But who defines what's true? Truth is just a matter of perspective. No "arthouse" movies for this lot. Football, pot noodles and extra strong lager. In the break, they watch "Eastenders." In the sometimes brilliant British sitcom "Keeping up Appearances" there was a fantastic character named Onslow. Onslow (Keeping Up Appearances) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Check him out and you should get an idea.

To keep a woman happy you only need something 8,5cm long and 5,4cm wide. Studies show that it really doesn't matter if it says "Visa" or "Mastercard" on the front. :D

dunno bout 50", have managed to get 42" hd plasma and haven't had to abstain from sex. The "trouble and strife" is very happy with the t.v and the sex.

Your right about some females watching soaps though! And yes i do prefer real beer rather than light beers, rats p*ss comes to mind reference light beers. :p

Wonder what they would give up for one of those 106" plasma screens...
I bet some would happily part with what's behind their codpiece for one  :D

Always consider the source DW. Comet is the sort of multi-purpose white goods store who's customers are usually early-to-late middle aged couples with kids in tow. Moonbiter's got them well and truly summed up. I'm actually surprised that it was only 47%/33%, I've always considered the typical Comet customer as being well and truly past it.

I can't personally think of anything worth that sort of sacrifice, not even a Fender Jeff Beck Stratocaster, and if I was 30 years younger Sparky_kat wouldn't need a TV of any type.

@Moonbiter - It's okay, I am familiar with British men (and also Keeping Up Appearances, as it happens). I guess the problem for these guys is there's not that much football (or Eastenders) on late at night...

@galraen - Actually, yeah, what kind of idiot would buy their TV from Comet anyway? They're such a rip-off and the staff are completely clueless.

More to the point, how does doing a survey which claims that x amount of men would rather have a big TV than have sex actually persuade more of them to buy a TV? I must be missing something in their marketing scheme.
Who, me?!?
