Trolls Keep Killing My Game...

Post by Thrasher91604 »

Hi all!

After the hell of Dragon's Eye normal trolls, the snow trolls are crashing my machine at the Wyrm's Tooth. Only snow or normal trolls seem to be doing it. I suspect it has to do with webs and their "almost dead" falling down animation or behavior. In both cases I was also casting other magic that was causing damage (spike stone, skull trap, etc...), and using ranged weapons, so may be they have something to do with.

After about 8 tries, ratcheting down the settings to finally the lowest of the low config options, I got through it. Although, I just may have gotten lucky instead, and settings may not have really helped.

Needless to say this is VERY frustrating. Certainly kills any possible desire to replay this POS.

Has anybody else heard of this problem, and know of a solution?

Thanks!

The only one I can think of: disable 3D acceleration for spells? You probably already tried that...

Yep, tried that too, to no avail...

Has anyone else experienced this and figured out how to do killzone tactics on trolls without game crashes?

Or is flooding a troll field with a gazillion spells going off just a big no-no? It sure looks good, before hang time (all the squishy sounds are a bit much though)...

Thanks!

Desperate measures: Change your desktop resolution & colours, update your drivers if possible.

I've got the latest drivers (my choices are very limited with Dell laptop OEM only drivers).

Changing the desktop resolution and colors is something I haven't tried yet.

Thanks!

I'm surprised that you go through all this trouble since there is an easy solution.

Please, if you can't post something even marginally helpful, don't bother. :)

I think he means that you should change your tactics. :)

There are so many different ways to defeat those HoF trolls (and all other enemies) without ever using web.
Discovering them yourself is the fun part, so I won't spoil it.

That still doesn't answer my question.

I like playing it that way.

If it's a roleplaying game, it should allow you to play it anyway you want, not force you to try another route, because of a bug.

Yes, well, but you seem to have a very peculiar bug, probably due to some combination of videocard, OS and CPU, or gods now what. That's the only drawback of PC gaming: developers can't count on one specific configuration.
So, since apparently we don't know a solution to your problem, Kmonster suggested to circumvent the problem. He's only trying to help.

Actually someone else had trouble with trolls too, so it's not that unusual.

I've found the game goes a lot faster if I can get a bunch of enemies to follow a decoy with free movement into a web/entangle trap and then rain holy hell on them with spells and ranged attacks. The speed boots help a lot with this approach. :) But this breaks the game when regular or snow trolls are involved.

Other approaches are so much more tedious.

Did the colour/resolution changes do anything?

The next time I experience this problem, I will certainly try desktop resolution and colors! I had gotten past the situation with the snow trolls I'd found so far, by the time I got your idea.

If I have another opportunity to web / entangle trolls and I get stuck again, I certainly will try it out.

My workaround was to change tactics (which is why I was disatisfied with the workarounds condescendingly alluded to above, because those weren't solutions, but workarounds I had found on my own already).

As I said, the game became a lot more tedious, but perhaps I should have taken more chances :) Though I don't like reloads because of deaths; kind of kills the immersion...

Just do it without Web. By the time you hit Wyrm's Tooth, trolls are pretty easy pickings. If you don't want to buff up to kill them in melee, just summon a bunch of fire elementals and Haste them. :)
When your back is against the wall... the other guy is in a whole lotta trouble.

Yeah, I've backed of my conservative webbing approach and just use lots of summons and ranged attacks. Making killzone traps is still more fun, though.
