Hi, I've recently started this game, and have run a few characters through the Santa Monica section to get a feel for how things work and what clan I like playing.
I've got a question about the snooty bloke standing near Mercurio's apartment block. My Toreador and Tremere characters were able to persuade him to give them money "for a cab" with no trouble. But when I play a Gangrel with the same level in persuasion he says he's short of money. His original response to her is different, too - he acts scared as soon as she speaks to him.
Persuasion seems to work fine with other NPCs, so this puzzles me. Does anyone have an explanation?

The success qualifiers may have been altered so that only particular clans will succeed if they use certain social skills. I'd guess that Toreador, Ventrue, and maybe Tremere have a better chance of Persuading / Seducing the snooty guy than Brujah, Gangrel, or (obviously) Nosferatu.
If you're a Gangrel, try using the same level only in Intimidate and you'll probably see equal if not better results.
Seems only logical since Brujah, Gangrel and Nosferatu are more likely to beat an appropriate response out of someone rather than ask nicely.
If I were that bourgeoise guy stuck in that neighborhood and someone looking like the Brujah or Gangrel character just walked up to me for no reason, I'd be scared too since I'd probably assume I was about to get mugged.

This is actually unlikely, but its possible that that dialogue option may check for charisma as well as persuasion, persuasion being composed of both scholarship and charisma. If you have the same rank of persuasion, but you have higher charisma on the Toreador or Tremere character as opposed to your Gangrel, this might be why.
But considering that the original response is different, its probably a clan based response (not a bug). Also note that not all conversations differ based on clan, so the fact that "persuasion seems to work fine with other NPCs" is not necessarily an accurate gauge.

Thanks very much for the quick replies. I'm using only the 1.2 patch at the moment. It must be clan based, as the Tremere and Gangrel both had charisma 2, scholarship 2.
Kid SixXx, I checked by experimenting with XP using the console, and using Intimidate would work, but that's not this character's way of doing things. My Tremere, on the other hand, would have no such scruples, but I guess that just like in real life people judge by appearances.
