I've noticed that since I've been here in the Underdark, that the conversations and chatter from my party has almost stopped. Jaheira has not talked to my NPC at all, and Jan's said nothing. The only one that seems to say any thing is Minsc.
In a couple of the battles, I had party members killed and had to use Raise the Dead to revive them. Could that have caused this?
Thanks
They turned me loose from the nervous hospital. Said I was well.
usually no, well take it as
"the gloomy underdark and the horrifiying creatures there, make a dangerous aura which intimidates even little jan"
so they are not as chatty as they usually are

Thanks, that's what I was thinking to. But since I had a saved game before coming here that I could use, wanted to make sure the resurrection thing was not the problem before I finish this area.

Getting them killed and all that should not be the reason as far as I know. Certain type of spell effects can affect romances (which might be fixed in patches), but not banter in general. I believe that banter triggers randomly, but is based on location and also length of play in real time; meaning if you have a lot short play periods, weeks in-game can pass without triggering anything. Certain characters would not say anything in certain areas or only very specific things, like Aerie sighing about being underground. And Minsc... well, Minsc is Minsc. Right Boo?
Behind the scenes, I believe every map area has a "classification" label associated with it. Each map area is classified as Outdoors, Indoors, Wilderness, Underground, etc.
While adventuring in map areas that are classified as "Underground" (and others?), I believe that the game temporarily disables inter-party/romance "random banters".
(I believe these area classification labels are also used for checking other things too, such as determining where your party is allowed to rest.)
Now, some characters will interject "situational comments", which are triggered during specific events. These "situational comments" are different from the "random banters" that get disabled during Underground map areas.
I guess the game's developers didn't want Jan to break the spooky mood.
Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

That's whats happening. The only talk is Iomen saying she wants to "leave this place" and Minsc talking to Boo. And some conversation with other game related npc's. I was also worried about the romance thing with Jaheira, because I had to resurrect her once.
You guys never cease to amaze me. How do you know all this stuff and how in the world to you remember it.
Thanks again.

yes thats true, a reagion is flaged, like dungeon, city etc, for certain talks you need to be in certain regions, eg some banter between yoshimo and nalia, you need to be in a dungeon
but would be fun though, in the midst of some crazy mindflayer dungeon and yaheira starts to mourn about citys xD
spiolerish.

when in the underdark, romances are put on hold so you wont blow your cover. that should also tie in with the bantering too..... less talk, less chance to blow your drow cover and be found out. when you get above ground again... the banter should return to normal.
Smile.... That way they wont know what your thinking

Also bear in mind Sonny that there are key stages in the romnces, certain events have to take place to trigger the next move forward. With Jaheira the most crucial ones take place in and around Athkatla, specifically in the docks during the Montaron/Harpers quests, which I believe you left until after Spellhold. So, if that's the case, your romance is effectively on hold until you get back to the city. The romance will only end if she leaves the party, either by being kicked out, or due to imprisonment. Death is merely an inconvenience in this game, unless it haapens to your main character, it doesn't affect romances, in one particular instance, the reverse.
