Resolution & colour depth problems

Post by Tricky »

Well, the title says it all. The resolution test flickers too, so I guess it's not some kind of glitch.

ATI Radeon 9800xt
Omega drivers, ROD v3.8.360.

I have done óne complete format and reinstall since I last had BG2 installed, when the Hellgate worm ate my HD. Since I re-download all drivers at a later point, they can only be the same or newer that the ones I had installed when I started playing BG2, probably a year or so ago. But I don't know which I had back then.

I got nothing on this. Anyone?

Catalyst drivers have given my slightly offbeat Hercules Radeon 9800xt trouble in the past (technical babble that I will spare you from). I have kept to Omega drivers for many years, never had trouble with them. Up until now not even while running Baldur's Gate 2.

There seem to be some problems on the lower resolutions too. Despite having selected 32 bit colors, I see lower bit colours and serious colour banding in the gradients. http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o136 ... /exmpl.jpg

Not pretty. Also upon starting the game, I sometimes get pieces of windows xp stuck on the sides, and it doesn't look quite like the correct resolution. I have to alt-tab to get rid of it. All odd stuff.

I'm thinking there may be something wrong with the BGconfig. I spend some more time toying with configurations, and I discovered I can't actually select 16 bit colours (I had no reason to try that, but I ran out of ideas). When I set them to 16, the setting is automatically returned to 32 bit when I restart. But then again, it never shows me 32 bit colours. They're always stuck at 16 bit. I could deal with the lower resolution, but a lot of the game's beautiful art is affected by 16 bit colours. It doesn't use pixel diffusion of any kind, so you can really tell the difference. Colour banding everywhere.

It's kind of a shame. I spend a few hours today finding new mods and even reporting an installation bug in one. Now it just looks like I'm gonna have to bail out again. =/

I'm sorry for not merging this post with the previous one, but I already merged three posts and I'd like this thread to have a little bump. Sorry about that.

I've tracked down the problem to an OpenGL driver not agreeing with the Infinity Engine. All my problems go away if I disable hardware support, but then I miss out on some of the prettier visuals again. I may have to settle for this if I can't fix this.

I'm going to try updating my OpenGL driver in a minute, but in the mean time I'd like to know if anyone has heard of OpenGL fixes or alternate patches for BG2. The thing is, one of the older regular patches is supposed to take care of problems with certain Ati cards. I'm not sure if this applies to me as well, but it is an interesting notion.

Seeing as how my Radeon is quite a bit more advanced than what they had back when that older patch was released, and since I've also installed latest patch I doubt I'm the only one still experiencing this. Perhaps someone came up with an independent fix already.

Yeah I do, 9.0c or some such. I believe 8.0 or 7.0 already comes shipped with Windows XP, so it's not really possible to miss DirectX any more. As for other games.. I play a few. But most of them use standardized DirectX rendering, not OpenGL. I wouldn't be surprised if that's why I didn't notice anything up until now. Especially with this older game.

Even the most basic OpenGL driver on my computer should be more advanced than what was available when BG2 was released. But still, to be on the safe side I tried finding a new driver for it. I don't specifically remember installing it, perhaps because I assumed some other software already installed it.

I looked around a bit on where to download the latest OpenGL driver, but I couldn't find place where to do so. You'd think OpenGL dot org would have an easy to find download link. Well.. it has hundreds of download links, but I just can't seem to find the one I need.

I think there is something I don't get about how OpenGL works or how it is normally installed. I think back in olden days games would install a windows OpenGL driver for you, if you lacked any. BG2 may have done that, but it would probably have been incompatible with Windows XP. I don't know. There's lots of pre-millennial games that *think* they are being installed on oldschool Windows NT when you try to get them to run on XP or 2000. And then they error out, refuse to install, etc.

The answer may lie somewhere along these lines, but for the moment I just don't see it yet.

I have similar setup, ATI 9800 pro on XP pro SP2 on a 20" LCD monitor. Don't remember which driver I am running, it was along time ago that I done the last driver upgrade for the card. I have not experience the problem you are having. I am using the wide screen mod to run the game at 1680x1050. It looks great, but the writings are a little small to read, even on a 20" LCD mon. Try use the wide screen mod instead of BG's config to change your resolution.

I have quite a different computer (Nvidia cards, for example) but I did have the same issue for a time. I found that disabling 3D rendering fixed the issue, but that caused some lag issues, especially in large battles.

Since then, however, I must've done something accidentally to fix it, as I started playing again recently, and enabled 3D rendering, which now causes no problems...

Could be it somehow fixed itself by disabling and then re-enebling that. I dunno. Hope that helps at all :)
