Game Speed Vs Casting Speed

Post by Houston810 »

I play with the game speed all the way up usually, but it recently I have been thinking that I'm not getting the advantages that I should. For example As a sorc with the Robe of Vecca and the amulet of power and improved haste, my spells are pretty much instant cast even at low game speed but you can't really get any faster than instant cast but the melee enemy's have no cap on how fast they can move. So I was just wondering is there a game speed lvl where I kinda start to lose my edge?

That obviously depends on your personal reflexes, dexterity with a mouse and degree of willingness to constantly pause the game.

Well yeah, but lets say I pause at every moment that gives me an advantage and that I am humanly capable in every aspect.

My fighting style as a sorcerer is spells and with the game speed at 30 with the Robe of Vecca the power amulet improved haste and improved alacrity I have instant cast with no wait, much like Jon in is fight against the Cowelwizards and ShadowTheifs when exiting the dungeon near the start of the game.

With that said I have been thinking that even when I turn the game speed up to 60 I can't get any faster but that army of gith coming at me is moving towards me at twice the speed and getting double the hits in. At least thats what it seems like to me.

I think I see your point now. In any case it is important to realize you may have "instant cast", but you do not have "no wait". Baldur's Gate still uses a turn based system. You can push your speed very far, but eventually all those Gith are going to get a turn and start clobbering you. Naturally, if your gamespeed is really high, those turns are going to come and go really fast. I don't know their stats but I'd assume they get quite a few attacks.

Anyway, assuming we are talking perfect human and controls with lots of pausing, it shouldn't matter what your gamespeed is since we're still taking turns. Fact is however that noone is perfect and with your character speed you'll benefit from low gamespeed.

...

Did that make any sense to you? I think turn based is the key phrase here.

Irenicus actually casts spells very slowly compared to what you're able to with Vecna, Power, IA and a fast space-finger. He only gets off one spell/second whereas you're able to get at least 5.

When you get the hang of it you'll have wasted your whole spellbook before those Giths are even close to you.

Venca's robe and Power Amulet reduces spell time, but you're still bound to the "one spell per turn" limitation. Regardless that spell #1 can be cast instantly in turn #1 or not, you need to wait for the turn #2 to cast spell #2. Casting speed only helps you beat other spells if want to try to disrupt other casters spells, or beat the disruption that arrow coming at you might cause.

Alacrity removes the final limit (the wait time for the next turn to come) and allows you cast spell after spell. That means all 12 Magic Missiles if you have them...

So to the super-spacing to pause the game...
Isn't there an option to set the game to pause after a spell is cast?

Well, it also allows you to get all your attacks in that round since most toplevel casters are either d/m-classed or have energy blades equipped.
