Best gear for a mage
Personal opinion...what is the best gear for a mage in bg1. If you want go the extra mile your favorite solo character gear?
For me it is:
Robe of (Neutral for me) Archmage (bought at High Hedge)
2 Rings of Wizardry(once found near the Friendly Arm Inn, another in Baldur's Gate)
or Ring of Invisibility for special cases, IF you have TotSC(bought in Ugloth' Beard)
Amulet of Protection +1(there's just nothing better; Metaspell cannot even compare)
or Greenstone Amulet for special cases, IF you have TotSC(bought in Ugloth' Beard)
Cloak of Balduran(Undercellars)
Boots of Speed(entrance to Cloakwood Mines)/Boots of Avoidance(Nimbul)
Girdle of Piercing(a mage is vulnerable to arrows)
Wands(all of them; paralyzation one is the best for Undead Horrors; fireballs are cool, too, not to mention the summoning one)
Bracers Thac0 +1, in case you play Tutu and use Melf's Minute Meteors
And that's pretty much it. Of course, if I play with a party with all NPC-related mods for Tutu or for plain BG1, I usually take a fighter/thief and give Xan all that gear I mentioned.

Mine would be similar, except that I'd use 1 ring of Wizardry, 1 ring of Protection +2, and the amulet that gives an extra 2nd level spell (grrrr, can't remember the name!).
My favorite solo, which I have yet to play is a Berserker 7 dual classed into a Mage 8. This only works if I have Tutu installed.
Without Tutu, my favorite solo would be a Dwarf Fighter/Thief. They can stealth, and getting a 20 CON fairly early helps SOOOOO MUCH when soloing.

Amulet of meta-spell influence iirc ^_^Klorox wrote:Mine would be similar, except that I'd use 1 ring of Wizardry, 1 ring of Protection +2, and the amulet that gives an extra 2nd level spell (grrrr, can't remember the name!).
And yes, I agree with what has been said so far.
Sage plays a paladin,
