Hey, I didn't mind. That's what SYM is for (unless requested otherwise). I don't know that there's much interest here in anime, though. The taste has spread from Japan to the US, but has it really taken off yet in Europe?
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
Not so much of a bit of info on Anime, but rather a question...
What do you all think about the new computer generated cartoons? Couple of examples I can think of are Transformers and I even think Action Man has now gone to computer generated style.

Cartoon Law III
Any body passing through solid matter will leave a perforation conforming to its perimeter. Also called the silhouette of passage, this phenomenon is the speciality of victims of directed-pressure explosions and of reckless cowards who are so eager to escape that they exit directly through the wall of a house, leaving a cookie-cutout-perfect hole. The threat of skunks or matrimony often catalyzes this reaction.

I am an avid watcher of Anime they have on the Sci-Fi channel, most of it is crap but occasionally they have gems like Golgo 13.
Ghost in the shell 2 How cool, i actually bought the first one on import from the US and love it, it is just fantastic.![Smile :)](./images/smilies/)

@Vermont : Computer generated animation is not called anime. Anime is the term used to signify Japanese animation cartoon. I hapen to see the new 3D transformer, it's OK but Max Steel and Starship Trooper is a total disappointment.
@ Sleepy : It's all depend on a person point of viewe to determine wether the anime is good or bad. If you wanna relax and enjoy some funny ones you can always try Crayon Sinchan, Taiho ! Shichauzo ! (You are under arrest), Ah ! My Goddes !, etc. Btw the graphic for Sinchan is not as good as other anime but the story will makes you laugh till you drop
If you like GiS perhaps you should try "Akira" and "Now and Then, Here and There" (Caution ! NT,HT is not for children viewing !)
Another update : for you who have watched "Gatekeepers" made by GONZO, GOnzo currently plan to release a new sequel called "Gatekeepers-21"

Ghost in the Shell was one of the first anime features I ever saw, and the first DVD I ever bought. I was in awe. There was also a great feature called "A Wind Named Amnesia" that was also amazing. These two movie were the main reason I began to explore anime. What did people think of "Princess Mononoke"? There were many things I enjoyed about the movie, but in the end I was a little diappointed.
Those who will play with kitties must expect to be scratched.

i love 'princess mononoke' it was just beautiful. i guess the american audience would be a pissed cause its not really a happy ending. but the ending means that life goes on no matter what. then again i tend to worship myiazaki's work like naussica, crimson pig, and kiki's delivery service.
i always consider anything from the gilbi studio worth looking at, has any of you cry when watching grave of the fireflies?
if you want to see real good cgi i recommend 'blue submarine no.6. very good story line too.
can't wait to see final fantasy movie.

@jennabard: Unfortunately correct about American audiences. Many people here didn't like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" because it didn't follow the usual formula, but I found it refreshing and moving. Do you know when Final Fantasy opens? Should be one of the highlights of the summer.
Hmmm, first anime. Actually, one of my patients recommended "Crying Freeman", and I thought the whole idea was silly. But I rented it and ... well, instant paradigm shift. My wife was in Africa with the Peace Corp and talks about how her whole view of American culture (or lack thereof) changed when she returned. In a similiar way, my whole relationship with animation and its potential to express allegory and narrative
radically changed. Except for my Bambi tape, which I sleep with under my pillow

How so? This sounds interesting.Thantor writes:

@fable: I'm far less articulate about it than she is, but she was stationed in an area of Sierra Leone where there had never been any white people, never mind Peace Corp workers. When she returned to the US, it took her almost a year to readjust. Two of the things she found most upsetting were the wanton consumerism and the gratuitious violence. The first movie she went to, about a month after her return, completely overwhelmed her and she had to leave the theatre. She feels most Americans live tiny, self-centered lives with no concerns about the environment, the rest of the world, or their own interpersonal relationships. Which, of course, accords perfectly with the current administration. BTW, I have enjoyed your posts on the theology thread. They are always thoughtful and intellegently rendered.
Oh, and ... um... I haven't got her to watch much anime yet.![Smile :)](./images/smilies/)

@thantor- i'll have to check on final fantasy, i think it will come at the end of june.
i have to totally agree with your wife about the american culture. most of my childhood was living in europe with my dad in the army. coming with my background to a regular school was shocking. for the first time i was an outsider. never really recover from it.
i do recommend your wife watching 'princess mononoke' and the 'crimson pig', 'grave of the fireflies' and 'wings of hommeasise'. the are all quite mature that lack obscene violence. 'grave of the fireflies ' is about two children trying to survive after world war 2 and 'wings' is about man's attempt for space travel.
@kid- both!
but the manga is better ![Stick Out Tongue :p](./images/smilies/)

@kid: Thank you for the suggestions. We are both doctors and there are certainly days were we could use a little light humor. It would be even better if we could put some Crayon Sinchan the waiting room.
@jennabard: We did watch "Princess Mononoke" together and she really enjoyed this story, in part because she is so passionate about environmental issues. We had a stimulating conversation after the movie, exploring all the various levels of meaning we discovered. Thank you, too, for your suggestions. Anime rentals are very limited here, but I will see if I can track them down. BTW, my daughter's name is Jena
.
@georgi: Thanks for the info. I enjoy grappling with your character in the dark flame thread. Hopefully Thantor won't get himself killed

U r welcome thantor3
For more depth you cantry Tiaho ! Shichauzo ! aka You're Under Arrest - Be sure to rent the OVA first (They suppose to be files number 1 - 4) Don't try to see YUA the movie first. You'll end up confused about character interactions and the movie main story about how terrorism affect a city
If you into some romantic things you can try Boys Be. It's kinda new, and the story about 6 highschool boys and girls finding thier first love
PS : the songs are good too - if you want I can provide you with the translation ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/)

my first exposure was probaby an OLD cartoon called G Force, anyoen remember that show? but i absolutely loved robotech, and have always been upset that the remaining seasons were never translated and released in the US. the only way i knew there were more shows was my sister and i woudl watch them on one of the Korean channels when we lived in korea. we had no clue what was being said, but it was pretty easy to follow.
as far as full length anime movies, anyone here see any of the Urotsukodoshi films? obviously my spelling may be a bit off, but if you've seen it, you'll know what i am talkign about.
