@Thantor, thanks for the compliment, which I return threefold. ;) I think not watching television for roughly twelve years has also led to shift in my own perspective--like your wife, I can't take the extraordinary violence in films that most Americans have learned to expect as part of the "fun."

One of the video clerks was raving this evening about Princess Mononuke, but we didn't take it out at this time. I think we may grab it in about 3-4 weeks. The artwork looks good, and I'm curious how they'll integrate the "environmental" message into anime. My fear is that it will be like a US film, merely a backdrop for a tale of violence, a little cheesecake, and occasional beautiful sunsets to show that the producers care about Mother Nature.

@ Sleepy : It's all depend on a person point of viewe to determine wether the anime is good or bad. If you wanna relax and enjoy some funny ones you can always try Crayon Sinchan, Taiho ! Shichauzo ! (You are under arrest), Ah ! My Goddes !, etc. Btw the graphic for Sinchan is not as good as other anime but the story will makes you laugh till you drop :D If you like GiS perhaps you should try "Akira" and "Now and Then, Here and There" (Caution ! NT,HT is not for children viewing !)

I wasn't a great fan of akira, i thought it was tiny bit boring ;-) it's like 2001 you feel obliged to like it.

I loved the Wolf trilogy, can't remember all their names, one was called the Castle of Caglistro' they were really fun.

Patlabor is fantastic. :)

I also enjoyed Orgun: (can't remember the sub title)

I watch so many i forget their names ;)

We as of yet have been talking about the lighter side of anime, any comments on the subversive anime?

Actually I try not to violate the GB rules, but Buck if you reading this just drop me a mail to stop this kind of discussion.

Sleepy you're asking for subversive anime. There are 2 kinds of them :
1. Hentai - Which mostly contain porno scenes
2. Ecchi - Contain softcore porn scenes.

Hentai sometimes also have a very high violence scene , i.e raping (and it's shown in drawings) etc.

Some of those that I know - but never saw them (kinda hard to get here) :
Golden Boy
F*Compo - story about a boy living with crossdresser family

I think Urotsukodji also categorised as above due the violence.

Actually I have some more lists but I'll see if this one pass our mods :)

Current update :
IRIA (Zeiram Animation) - Zeiram is movie like masked rider - this is the prequel of the movie :)
Trigun - God I love seeing Vash the Stampede in action :)
Sakura Taisen aka Sakura Wars - From game platform Drem Cast :)
Record of the Lodoss War
Inu Yasha
Love Hina - This one have lotsa series incl Love Hina Spring and LH Christmas
Kimagure Orange Road
Mazinger series (This one is a classic for mecha mania)
GetterRobo (Also Classics) I dunno what's the english title
Shin Getter Robo (The new series of Getter Robo)
Meitantei Conan aka Detective Conan

The only reason i asked is because i watched Adventure Duo the other day, and no one should watch that it is sick and twisted, people should be aware that not all anime is quite yellow animals running around electrouting the bad guys.

I also watched Violence Jack and this is also quite shocking, but at least there is some kind of reason or point that the makers are trying to make.

Rumour :
Some friends just told me that "Crayon Sinchan" ending quite disasterous since Sinchan was killed by his mom due to his unacceptable naughtiness. Can anyone confirm this one ?

no update today, being searching for some hentai title :)

shin-chan's mom did what?!

one of my favorite, favorite, big mech animes is 'the kishin corp' it's an alternate past set during world war 2 with big mechs and aliens. it was an awesome 4 part story. i used to have it one laserdisk, now i'm hoping that pioneer will bring it out on dvd format. another big mech favorite is 'giant robo' love it's pulp-fiction style.

most of the anime sited on this thread i've seen.
except 'escoflowne' and 'mysterious play'
are these anime good?

Urotsukodji is definitely hentai. a demon with hundreds of penises raping just abotu everyone till they explode. yeah, it's a bit graphic, not for the faint of heart.

@jennabard - i lived in seoul for a few years a while back. i moved away just one year before the olympics.

As I recall, there was an important Hindu solar deity who, because of his lewd lifestyle, was cursed by a holy man, and forced to bear more than a hundred vaginas over his body. As a result, he hid, until the assembled godly multitude convinced the holy man to change the curse into hundreds of eyes.

You know, if this deity had seen Urotsukodji during his Uber-female stage, I bet they could have hit it off handsomely. ;)

I love the stories like Dark Myth where they go running off into all this spiel about who did what and when, the myths of ancient Japan are just so cool :) :D

I had heard of that film with the 100 (how many was it?) appendages, sounds a bit to strange nad shocking for my weak heart :D

Escaflowne its quite interesting. Kinda remind me of Dual ! Paralel Trouble Adventure and El Hazard ! but have different story line.

As for mysterious play - the other name is "Curious Play" aka "Fushigi Yuugi" (FY). I certainly give the anime no star. The story about 2 high school gals warped back into Chinese Mystical world. Where Miyaka Yuuki the main char gotta gather 7 star of Shuzaku to fulfill her wish.

Why I hate that FY anime, because the main char is sooo loud - i.e. she screams a lot and always call for Tamahomes help every time she are in trouble, she's got kissed by most of people in love with her and she just give in *GRRRR* I can't remember how many guy kissed her  And I can hear her scream "TAMAHOMEEEEE !!" that really ticks me off. BTW the ending kinda lame since most of the Shuzaky warriors got killed - but it still got happy ending. I personally don't reccommend this anime, I better watch "Sailor Moon" :)

Last month, a chapter closed in the history of anime. Rod Shaile, the last dedicated employee of Manga Entertainment Limited, cleared his desk, turned off the lights, and shut the door on his way out. Just two months shy of its tenth birthday, the UK's Manga Video is no more.

The link

Chief among them, of course, are the species Pokémon and Digimon, that have developed a camouflage so popular that few even realise they are anime. When Fox and the Cartoon Network are dripping with Japanese cartoons, and Final Fantasy getting a nationwide release, anime looks very different from the way it did ten years ago.

I just got back from watching 'final fantasy:the spirit within'

and i must say that it is the best summer movie i've seen this year. even though, wedge and biggs and the summoned monsters like ifrit and shiva, did not make an appearance. it still had the essence of what the final fantasy series has. to me it was wonderful and they didn't cop out in the end either.

@jenna : Yep ! FF:The Spirit Within sure is a real nice PC animated anime ever. Not to mention it's the first full length 3D animated anime. The programmer sure give lots of nice touch especialy on Aki's hair. They're so realistic that looks like real hair ! :) My comment about Aki is she's sooooo kawaii.....if she's real I think I'll go for her :)
