Installing/Running on Windows XP

Post by Tartan »

So, reading is obviously not my strong suit since I ordered the Fallout Bundle (1 & 2, but not Tactics) which was only meant for Windows 95/98 or DOS...not Windows XP. So, of course, when I go to install the game I just get a message asking me if I want to installed DirectX 3a and then a black screen.

So, is there some work-around I could use to install and run the game on my XP computer...or should I just list it on eBay and try to cut my losses?

Okay, I got the DOS version installed and can run it, but audio is non-functional. The sound config program can't find my sound card and the options listed for manually selecting your card & settings are...well...archaic. Anyone have a work-around?

Obviously, reading isn't your strong suit. :p This question has been asked here before. Search around for answers. I know that to play FO1, you have to copy the whole disc to your harddrive and run the setup/install in compatibility-mode.

Ah....forgot all about Compatibility Mode (been ages since I had to use it). In my case, I had to "CM" the Setup.exe file on the CD to get it to install and then "CM" the shortcut in my Start Menu to play the game. Works like a charm, thanks!
