I've got this three person team which is kicking some serious butt:

Elf Fighter/Mage/Thief protagonist
Jaheira (romance)
Aerie

I'm a little light in the tank department, but the FMT is doing well with some spell protections (virtually every spell memorized helps in combat). Jaheira rocks as she always does, and Aerie is a great spellchucker... almost as good as a Sorcerer (a lot more planning, but ultimately more versatile as well).

I just need to think of some cool Cleric spells to throw into a sequencer and I'm ready. The Robe of Vecna was made for a C/M!!

I'm currently running an Anti-Palading with Jaheira and Yoshimo. I intend using SK to turn Imoen into an assassin when we are re-united, the idea being to go through the game without any Arcane magic. I'm toying with the ida of dumping Jaheira and replacing her with Korgan, and going no magic, period.

My next playthrough is going to be a trilogy, and I intend to beat Eclipse and Ascension with it without even the slightest cheese. I'm still considering some classes, but an Inquisitor and Sorcerer are very likely. Fighter/Thieves are good too... but so are ranger/clerics. Bleh. :]

I wonder what the most powerful trio is...

Shapeshifters can take a real beating and come back for more I have found..a few nice rings and bits and they are getting close to invunerable(spelling?)

Especially if you don't mind using the bug to dispel their claws.

Although without bugs, a Shapeshifter (Great Druid)/Fighter is strong to, able to have a constant -24 AC while in Greater Werewolf form as well as some high resistances.

A Blade, Jester and Skald would be interesting. In between fights they could play Idols.

I once played all the way through BG1 and SOA with a Cleric/Ranger and Imoen (Thief dualled to Mage), and I added Sarevok in TOB. I think my Three Bhaalspawn were every bit as awesome as The Five (despite the jealous taunts of The Five, who were chopped into foe-shaped chunky bits when I was finished with them).

I don't know if single-class Mages get enough credit (which is basically how I play Imoen when she isn't picking a lock or providing ranged support)). They can't memorize as many spells as Edwin or cast as many spells per day as a Sorcerer, but they can wear the Amulet of Power and learn any spell in the game. Otherwise, what's the difference?

Single-class Fighters are also killing machines, especially when they're equipped with a weapon like the Ravager and when they can inflict Deathbringer Assault.

A party like that seems viable. I'm not sure how they would handle Ascension, though (or nearly impossible encounters like Eclipse).

Eclipse is a lot easier than Ascension, though. But for a party of three bards, both would be insanely hard. While it's true that bards can be powerful when buffed, both of these encounters have enemies that actually knows how to debuff to great extent, which no vanilla-game enemy do. And without buffs, bards go down very fast.

This actually sounds interestingly funny... ; ]]]]]

I simply can't go with no magic. Waiting for some spells to debuff on their own is simply too dull for me. So the no-magic idea is out.

But what I might do is this:
Me: Barbarian or fighter
Jan or Haer'dalis
Minsc (I'd say Keldorn, but I can't justify being good and keeping him in the party for the whole game)

Jan may be the better choice for his thief abilities, but I think Haer is better when things get rough. Besides, I hate having to search for bolts all the time, which is why I never take Mazzy as well.

Although, what might be interesting is this:
Me: Archer
Mazzy
Jan

I've never successfully ran through with only ranged attacks. Weren't there some opponents where ranged attacks aren't worth much (golems for example)? ...No matter, Mazzy and the archer can wield a couple of decent swords or maces as well.
