Issue with fire in Oblivion

Post by SinisterProphet »

Hey I just wanted to see if anyone could help me with a fire problem I have.
It seems that after I finished downloading my latest mod for oblivion

(Called Lost Paladins of Divine(I think that it is this mod that is causing problem))

-and activated it, that all fire is

(including candle light and just anything that gives off light)

-giving off these purple squers.

They come out from within the fire and then grow bigger until they dissolve. It's probably the texture of the fire (the glow or something) that I am not supposed to see but somehow the game is showing it to me.

If anyone knows what I should do then please do tell ;) .

I've had that mod installed for some time and not had those issues, however I do know that the mod does have lamps in it, that do use lighting effects. They have scripted effects which I'm not sure actually work properly, or at least not as intended, but I've not had any problems with them, apart from the fact that the lamps don't work if you move them, which they are obviously supposed to.

It could be that the mod is clashing with another mod you have installed. You could try starting a new game, de-select all your other mods and then add them in one at a time to see if you can detect which one it is clashing with, then decide which mod you want most. Alternatively if it's not causing any actual problems you could just try to live with it.

You could also try contacting the mod designers, the info on how to is ion the readme file that came with the mod.

I de-activated all of the addons but the damage seems to be done. There must've been some conflicts with the one of my addons which screwed up the lightning. I would try to repair the game but it can't see an option for it. Any ideas? (Living with it is the last thing I will do ;O )

Ahh and one more thing. There is a huge "!" sign comming out from some npc's but that is very rare. It's as I said a huge "!" sign with a yellow texture surrounding it. It may be a known issue so if anyone knows what is going on with my oblivion let me know.

You COULD uninstall the game and all mods (keeping save games), and then reinstall everything. It is likely to work better than just deactivating, I think. After re-installing the game and official expansions, install the problematic mod next and see what happens.

There are some odd little effects in the game, anyway; like the triangles and squares surrounding sigil stones when you pick them up - don't always show, but most times they do, in my game. I quite like them, actually, but they are only small, and only occur around sigil stones; but they ARE light-related, so I suspect your mod may well have conflicts with the original game, not with other mods.

Ahh okey. Thanks for your help, both of you. Though I can live with the fire issue but the problem with the "!" that I recently discovered after posting this thread is not something I can tolerate...

Then Fljotsdale's suggestion is probably the best one SinisterProphet. The light glitch is one thing, but an exclamation mark over a character indicates something's been broken on it. It could be something simple and none-essential, but probably better for your own peace of mind and future sanity to bite the bullet and re-install now.

They're both signs of missing files.

The purple thing is textures and the ! is meshes. I would suggest reinstalling any replacers you use.

Well I never deleted anything that would indicate missing files but I am re-installing the game and adding the mods, one by one to try to prevent this from happening again. I'm biting the bullet. Thanks for fast and good answers.

Don't forget to defrag before re-installing! Bethesda games like a nice clean, tidy environment!

Confirmed it was the Lost Paladins addon that screwed up the "special effects in the game". It's a loss though coz that armor is very nice looking :(

DEFRAG means ? :)

Defragment. Look for Disk Defragmenter, which you will find in in your START menu, probably in Accessories, under System Tools. If you are unfamiliar with it, you REALLY need to run it! Unless you have a brand new machine, anyway.

When you have used your machine a lot, or played games on it a lot, bits of information get stuck in all sorts of odd bits of free space all over the place - in other words, the info is fragmented. Running Defragment will tidy up all the info so that it is brought together contiguously. The game heaves a great sigh of relief - as does your computer - and runs more smoothly. Elder Scrolls games REALLY need installation AFTER defragmentation in order to run efficiently.

Defragmentation can take quite a while, especially if your poor computer has never been defragged!

BTW, I NEVER have a char wear armour after the first few levels. I prefer to use enchanted clothing that I have enchanted myself with Shield spells of various kinds. They offer MUCH better protection than armour! The max protection you can get seems to be 85 in total, which ain't bad, imo. :)

Don't b too downhearted, the armour may have looked nice, but it wasn't all that. The decent stuff was ruined with feeble enchantments, and the replicas weren't any better, or even as good as, Orcish. Same story with the weapons.

What you're really missing is a very challenging dungeon with some very, very tough monsters, those Werewolves are possibly the toughest opponents I've met, er on second thoughts scratch possibly. For once I actually felt cheated when I got my rewards, which is almost a refreshing change from being inundated with game killing super goodies.

If you really want to play the mod though, check out the forums you get pointed to in the readme, I'm sure someone there could halp with the problems.
