Loss of level/exp

I was lvl 16 when I freed Valdane and got the Relic. I returned to Skuldoon and bought a bunch of nether ingredients. I opened up my character screen and upped my lvl in Nether Magic. A couple of minutes later, I opened it again, and I was lvl 9.

Anyone know what happened? Do spending advance points lower your lvl.

Sounds like you used the game editor at some point, and you didn't copy the number in the "experience" frame to the "advance" frame.

I think you are right.

And when I tried to change the xp in the game editor, it dropped me to lvl 8 and I was stuck there. Fortunately, I had a game saved where I was still lvl 15. So, I loaded that and re-did the stuff to get the relic.
