Experiencing an Error

Post by Godwin »

I've just suddendly started experiencing an error when i attempt to load a game, i have ToB installed and when i select Load Game from the main menu i get "An Assertion failed in ChVidImage3d.cpp at line number 1957".

Before that i started getting a major error in Windspear Hills, i'd load the game and after afew minutes the whole computer would just shut down! Any ideas?

I tried re-installing the game from scratch but it does exactly the same thing.

Did you clear your cache folder after uninstalling the game?

Did you install the latest patch?
By cleaning your cache he means cleaning your temp folders, registry, etc.
I recommend TuneUp Utilities 2008 for that stuff. Works great in keeping your computer tidy.
For a quick fix, trx Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Disk Cleanup

be sure to backup your save game files.

When you did a reinstall, did you COMPLETELY remove it (including the profiles, save game)?

What's you computer specs? What OS (I'm assuming WinXP)?

After uninstalling, delete everything from your BGII directory, except for savefiles, portraits and sounds.

That's not at all what he meant by clearing cache. The BGII install folder (usually C:\Program Files\Black Isle\BGII - SOA or something like that) has a cache folder which stores the last few areas you've been to. BGII pulls from that cache first to load things (it's primarily useful if you're running with less than a full install). It's entirely possible that the file in that cache folder became corrupted and that is the problem. To clear your cache, delete everything in that cache folder.

As a note, the error you're getting is very often related to a corrupted save game. If clearing the cache doesn't work (it may), try loading the most recent save previous to the one you're trying to load.

Also, the override folder could be causing trouble. Make sure you delete it as well, if you're reinstalling.

Many thanks for the help guys, it must of been a corrupted auto-save that was causing the problem as after i deleted it things seem fine, luckily i had quick saved it shortly before as well!
