I have read various threads on this subject together with the page on mages.
All seem to point to the fact that if you choose to make the Staff of Power, all the apprenti die.
However, one of the apprenti asks you to invoke Timora on their behalf.
This could mean one of three things.
1) You have to make an offering at the Temple of Timora.
2) You should cast a luck spell on them.
3) Absolutely nothing at all.
I am wondering if they can be protected using spells, scrolls etc.
Has anyone tried, and with what result?
Staff of Power

The answer is number 3. There is absolutely nothing you can do to save them with a spell, scroll or anything else, or well okay you could charm them and take them outside the area by making them attack you near the transit, but even though that would save their lives you wouldnt really get anything out of that, except maybe feel good about yourself or something.

I think that you're right. Their deaths is something that has obviously been programmed in. I cast some protective spells on them such as spirit armour and bless. They turned hostile, I was able to trap them in completely different parts of the sphere, and then slept. They were killed by explosions wherever they were! Obviously the progrmmers did not want them kept alive!
You cannot keep the apprentices alive by using protective spells. And the chance to get the Staff of Power is very small indeed.
Your apprentices turned out hostile because of the Spirit Armor spell. When it wears off, it deals a little Magical damage unless the target saves vs spells. So, if this spell is cast on a neutral and he fails his save, this means that he'll turn hostile.
Note that this also affects NPCs which you dismissed temporarily or permanently and still have Spirit Armor cast on them. The only way to prevent them turning hostile is quickly rejoining them. Or hoping they'll save vs spell.
