The genie you meet in the beginning of the game

Post by Rancour »

Aataqah, that is what he is called,if my memory serves me.
I just started the game again,I want to complete it with tactics and Saerelith mods. And just when I got out of the room with that shimmering device,I ran into this guy once again. He asked me his question once again,I whacked the ogre, received the exp.And still,I have some questions.
1.Who is this guy, anyway?Maybe he came from Baldur Gate's 1?
2.Is there a place where I can meet him later in game?
3.Does it matter what you answer to his question?I mean, something like all those trials in the Nine Hells?
P.S.Always like the commentary Minsc gives out when he hears the question.(;.
P.P.S.Can anybody tell me how to kill Improved Iliych without cheesing and on the "insane" difficulty?I managed it only on "novice",and that, cheesing immensely, luring each member of the enemy party into the sewers, resting after each kill and so on....

1. I don't know.
2. No
3. Yes it does. One of the answers gives you 3500 xp points and a fight with an Ogre Mage, the other answers give you nothing.

P.P.S. Improved Illyich is tough. So tough and unbalanced, actually, that most people don't install this particular part of the tactics mod. He's especially dangerous if you install with him the toughest random spawns and another part of the mod(forgot what it was), which causes after each resting, 2 duergar fighters and a duergar mage to come after you, and they don't disappear if you don't kill them, mind you, so if you rest a lot, you risk having a duergar army around you. Besides, enemy Duergar mages come protected from Fire, Cold, and with an imbibed Potion of Magic Shielding and Magic Resistance(not sure about the last one), and with melf's minute meteors too, which makes fighting them quite hard.

In short, the best tactic that works vs Improved Illyich is bombarding him&his gang from a safe distance with Skull Traps and then running away Hasted, Invisible AND protected from Evil. Invisible so that the fighters cannot see you, Protected from Evil so that the Minor Glabrezu cannot smell you, and Skull Traps because they can be set and the enemy bump into them later, while Fireballs just explode and thus can miss. This is tactic for a soloer(solo-mage).
The enemy patrols from the center of the library to the center of the upper room(where usually the normal Illyich waits), so knowing this, you can set your Skull Traps from a safe distance. Best send your mage alone, hasted, protected from Evil, while the rest of the party is hiding somewhere in the back, and cast as many Skull Traps as you can, running a little back every time you cast one, and having Invisibility ready to be cast.
On character creation, be sure to pick the following essential spells: Protection from Evil, Remove Magic, Melf's Minute Meteors(excellent for spell-disruption), Invisibility(a scroll can be found, but still essential to a sorcerer), Invisibility radius 10'(essential to a party), Skull Trap.

If you picked another class (different from mage or sorcerer) at character creation, the things may look grim. Yet, with the help of Imoen and the scroll of Invisibility found on the 2-nd level of Irenicus dungeon, you can still win the fight, but ONLY if you acquire protection from evil scroll somewhere in the dungeon as a random treasure drop. Pro Evil is essential to avoid the demon, since it is not fooled by Invisibility, and once he spots you, the whole gang will arrive and you'll most certainly die.

The other option in this case is resting&killing spawning duergar, earning 6000 xp points each time, until you've reached higher levels of xp with your party so that you have access to more druidic spells with Jaheira and longer-lasting arcane and divine buffs, then you can(again with proper tactic) kill the most dangerous enemies(the mage-duergar and the demon) in open combat. Just don't forget, in all cases to interrupt the enemy mage's Dark Planetar summoning, because if the Planetar appears on the battlefield, it is end-the-game for you.

You can, of course, totally forget about Improved Illyich since he doesn't block your way out of the dungeon. But you'll miss a lot of xp, a good fight and some nice starting enchanted items, including the overpowered Druid Acorns.
