The game runs fine on it's own, without patches?

hello there, i have installed VTMB + patch 1.2 + patch 5.7 a few days ago;
everything was ok, I even played for a few hours; I restarted the game several times to apply video changes, it worked fine;
the next day when i tryed to run it, after the initial logo movies (which run ok) the main menu seemed to lag extremely awfull like 0.1 fps and the screen was full of artifacts so that i couldnt see a thing and the cursor was stuck - thus unplayable;
after several reinstalls (whith proper reg cleanings and all that) it seems to behave as bad as before;
i had no hardware updates, neither software; what could be the problem???

i tried to override refresh, changed video driver, some video options, underclocked my gpu, same thing... all my other games run ok no artifacts at all.
any help would be appreciated. thanks
PS : the videocard is a geforce 6600 gt

I haven't tried it since all the trouble began but I doubt it because I started playing Bloodlines when it was still v1.0 and the game was full of bugs. There was even a similar crash at the end of the Society of Leopold which prevented playing the game further and it was the main reason I installed Wesp's unofficial patch in the first place.

Few things I noticed:

When infiltrating the Giovanni mansion, I no longer gain any experience for killing Bruno. Even after killing Bruno, I've found some guards to be willing to talk to you, rather than attack.

Also, I found out that if you activate passive disciplines (such as Auspex or Celerity) multiple times in a row, that they stack, so if I click to activate celerity ten times, it will last 140 seconds. Is this intentional?

I removed the XP because people persuaded me that Bloodlines never awards senseless violence. About the guards, they probably didn't notice you killed Bruno, but this is an AI issue I won't be able to fix.

I don't know, even if it isn't it's probably hard-coded and in effect similar to the auto-renew commando anyway.
