But I realized, after I posted a bit, that it really isn't something you can "join" unless you have that certain sense of humor already. I don't. ;)
I know how you feel. Those SYM days were really something to behold!

Well, this is a good point. I should really just shut up and stop feeling sorry for myself. ;)
That there; exactly the kinda diversion we coulda used.

some thoughts

There are some common themes that have emerged through this thread... and I am wondering if they can addressed in a constructive manner....

One issue that has come up is the spam vs non-spam. I am uncomfortable with the idea of creating a separate forum for debates, yet I do recognise that wading through large amounts of banter in a serious thread can be a bit annoying. Nonetheless, I sense that the "no-spam" edict on threads tends to discourage people from posting, and it amplifies division between different groups within SYM. Maybe there is a way of getting around this by finding a way to highlight spam posts that occur in serious threads. For example... maybe they could be written in small text... or maybe they could be written in something like yellow font (I think yellow would work well because it is highly visible, and I don't think anyone is regularly using it as a signature colour, please correct me if I'm wrong ;) ). This would make it easy for people who are following the serious conversation to quickly scroll past spam posts without having to spend any time reading them. I don't know... maybe this could get cumbersome.. but it might be a possible compromise...

I am also thinking that it might be an idea for people to consider remaining visible... because as various individuals have stated, if it appears that nobody is around, people will simply click out... I am as guilty as anybody of lurking... but I am working on changing the habit ;)

As far as the Instant Messenger issue goes.. I am not sure there is any way around this... because it is human nature to spend more time talking with close friends... And I know that I have had many private conversations that are not for public consumption, I'm certain I'm not alone in this regard. However, when I am online, I'm going to attempt some balance between posting in threads and engaging in private conversations ;)

Thoughts? :)

LOL.......erm...What I mean to say is Yes Dr.
But do you have any idea how long this ta kes

Oh my, I seem to have had a relapse :p

@DW: I think most of the regulars of SYM have a fairly good idea of when to spam and not to spam a thread. The main reason I come to SYM is to spam. When I see the political threads, or 'no spam' threads, I usually don't even bother looking at them. Once in a while something truly interests me and I participate, but I haven't the stomach for debate, so as soon as it turns into an arguement rather than a sharing of ideas, I typically bolt. I am not that interested in hardly anything. I remember when I first came to SYM, there were two taverns, three debates, two DF threads, and several miscilanious. The board flowed well and everybody was more or less filling their niche. I think there was a bit more of a separation then between the different groups. I think there is actually more cross over now than there has been since I have been here. I am not sure that different forums would be a good thing at all. as far as posting in colors, I am used to it, but it is a bit of work at times, especially when quotes are involved.

Perhaps something as simple as putting 'SPAM' in the title of any non serios post within a serious thread?......But in truth, I like our systm we have now. I dont think it is the culprit so much as the mood of the board shifted a few months ago, adn is still trying to right itself.

On thing you suggested though that I really do like is the remaining visible. I am guilty as the next person about lurking, but when I come OL, I look to see who else is OL. If the board is black, I busy myself with other things.

@Scayde,
In your shoes I think I would be more concerned at whose clothes he might be wearing in your absence rather than whether or not he is wearing any.... :o ;)

 She knows better than that. Why the hell would I wear clothes that are too small for me, anyway? My jeans are much more comfortable, thank you. :)

EDIT - Is this Minerva?

LMAO...not to worry, sweetness. DW and I were both born in places that are not known for those kind of...intimate relations. :D Now, if we were born elsewhere, such as Arkansas, Kentucky, West Virginia...

Anyway, I'm sure you get what I'm saying. Our relation is purely a spiritual one, so no, we're not committing incest. :D

Read my edit above. ;)

*sigh* Okay, looks like I better lurk again, as I have a tendency to ruin threads. :D

@Scayde: Why, don't do that, people might see me. Better to spare them that.
