I got a notion that enemy mages are "anything capable, extremely dangerous opponents, that should be immediately insect swarmed, breached, dispelled and focus-fired with extreme prejudice." So, when I got all available tools at my disposition, I simply used to overkill any mage that I came across. Unfortunately, curbstomping configuration consumes lots of resources, and I don't have third mage who could finally do things like throwing fireballs and other so-called "mage stuff".
Walkthrough here lists 77 areas in SoA, and I'm approximately at 50%. Because I started as L6/7 and now I'm L11, I simply thought of SoA XP cap as unreachable.
No, I haven't even started Spellhold, I got distracted by side quests, and mainly because I don't know how can I get here  I tried to not overuse game guides, and I think my next step is to visit graveyard. I don't know much what should I expect, except "Bodhi, as well as Spellhold, are not-so-easy parts." Because of that I am in no hurry (unless you say that L11 is enough).

Like Gaelan Bayle said at the beginning of Chapter 2, it's all about the money honey. Get lots of gold and you'll be off to Spellhold.
High-level mages are pretty heavy to be sure, but most enemy mages aren't that bad and don't need so much overkill. Melf's Acid Arrow is a nice anti-mage spell since it inflicts constant damage and so interrupts their casting. Poison weapons (arrows/bolts are good) will do the same if they aren't saved against, and elemental damage will go through Stoneskin.
If you really want fireballs and other classic mage spells, try using wands.

And if you're having problems dealing with wizards, just wait until you start running into Liches.

Looks like enemy mages are cheating bastards - he casted contingency minor spell turning, two protections, stoneskin and shadow door, I countered invisibility by true seeing, casted pierce magic, and his spellreflect remained. Rest of the fight was pretty easy (for him), my party was sleeped (since when sleep doesn't break on damage?), confused, silenced and I loaded out of frustration.

No, he did not use Spell Shield.
Anyway, he and his goons are down thanks to Chaotic Commands, Haste, and also DLTCEP. I don't know how could I miss 7 fighters, 3 umber hulks, mage and wywern with "yet another pretty common fight". It took all my strenght for BG2 for this evening, anyway.

Are you playing using some sort of mod? I cleared the same area yesterday, and all I ran into was the mage, a wyvern and some other rubble. I Dominated the mage with my nymph (thanks Jaheira!) and the fight was over in no time.

Only Fixpack and Tweakpack.
When I scouted that area with mage eye, I counted mage, ranger with 5 Umber Hulks and 1 Minotaur, and further away Wywern. On the way to them was some pulsing-thing, that would suck one of my partymember into some cavern with 4 warriors, knight and someone called Gish-all of them would immediately use Invisibility potion, and attacked (1-2 were illusions). Mage used contingency Minor spell turning, Prot against electricity and normal weapons, nothing else - and still couldn't be targeted by single-target spells.
After pushover fights before it was pretty nasty battle. Even warden was easier, but only because my pally rolled 20 with carsomyr and all of his pretty nasty contingencies (Images, spell turning, mislead, stoneskin) activated after his death
I haven't found answer about Improved Invisibility - does this spell mean that you can freely cast spells, while at the same time be invulnerable against direct spells (and resistant to melee), until Imp. Invis. regularly ends? What about counters like True Sight? Do they only make Mage visible while keeping its protection effect, or do they completely wipe both Invisibility and protection against melee&spells?

IIRC...
Yes re. Improved Invisibility, and True Sight dispells Invisibility (i.e. cancels it entirely).
