I agree, Bard's best offense, spelwise, is debuffing, they lack almost any direct damage spells.

Canaith Lyrist is full bard progression and high AB. It turns your bard from almost "as bad as a caster" to almost "as badass as a monk" with a decent weapon in hand.
For someone planning on taking a level of rogue for the traps, might as well take 2 levels and get Evasion, right?
Bards are not offensive minded, but they have unmatched versatility. With maxed UMD they can make use of all those scrolls and wands for some diversity of game play starting around level 10. And they keep the party rocking from the moment they get Stoneskin and Inspire Regeneration up until they hit Legionnaire's March-- turning your pansy mage into death on a stick with a staff.
Sure, you can't make a bard hit as hard as a fighter or cast spells spells like a sorcerer (at least, not all the time), but they are always fun if you play them like you love them.
