It's quite different from it's sequel, mainly due to using a quite different ruleset, but also in terms of plot, battles and overall design. I'm probably biased though, since it remains my favorite Infintiy Engine game.
I know a lot of people don't warm up to it because of it's "old school" design and gameplay elements.

(..came back to look at this thread again to see what I'd written about Isair and Madae immunity's.)Nope, I've not played it. "Old School" is fine by me. Most of the best video games ever made were done in the late 90's and early 2000's. I still have fond memories of Bard's Tale.
At some point I'll buy it and play it.
