If there was a gold medal for spamming, I'm sure a SYMer gets the gold!

Curling doesn't get enough credit, IMHO.
According to Bob Costas and NBC, curling is a national obsession in Canada. Can any of our northern neighbours confirm this?
NBC did a piece on curling and they said that while hockey is by far the favourite spectator sport, curling is more accessible and is easier to play, so more people play it than hockey. There's also the part about the winners having to buy beer for the losers, which may explain its appeal.

And why should it?

It is quite funny - last time Denmark did really well in curling (although we have what .... 6-7-8 people playing it

) - and that was totally unexpected.
This year they didn't so well - and now officials from the olypic comitty in Denmark calls the team a failur (or something - dosen't matter - it was that meaning).
Quite funny the way that peoples expectation get turned up because they accidently do well one time
On another note - it is good to see that the Olympic really tries to show of as a "doping-clean" event on the same hight as the Tour De France

by not taking all 3 gold medals from that spanish/german skier Dope-Mühler
But finnaly - gratz to canada for taking the gold in hockey - the only sport with almost as much violence as figure skating

Next to hockey, curling is a favourite up here (both are easy to practice because of all the ice, eh?). Curling's actually pretty good to watch. The Canadians got silver. Our final rock slide an extra 3 cm (a little over an inch for you Americans), making us lose.

Events that Really Shouldn't Be in the Olympics
Summer or winter...
Synchronized Swimming (I mean, come on...)
Ice Dancing
Dressage
Water Polo
Curling (sorry fans; it looks like a great sport but it doesn't seem...Olympic

)
Basketball (
why?...)
Event that Is In the Olympics Already but Definitely Needs More Coverage
Fencing
Any others?

Fencing and dressage
@Der-Draigen: I'm with you in fencing - it doesn't get nearly enough coverage. Do you fence? I did for a few years, but then my coach moved away ....
But I'm going to have to disagree with dressage. The person I mention in your massacre thread may have ruined my appreciation for women, but she sharpened my appreciation for fine horsemanship. Dressage is cool.

What weapon(s) did you fence?
I used to fence, only for about a year (foil and an intro to epee). It got too expensive after a while

But I'd really like to go back to it some day.
I think the reason it isn't covered well, is because it's hard for the audience to know what's going on if they're not familiar with the sport. And the announcers unfortunately aren't much help; I think they usually pull some guys from other areas to cover fencing. But hey, if the networks can do a special explaining curling, I figure they can do the same for fencing. We can always hope
A couple of years ago I heard that they were going to do away with the black wire masks and make them out of some clear stuff instead, so you can see the fencers' faces. They say it'll increase viewer interest. Hmm, I don't know, I kind of like the mysterious look of those black masks
Re dressage: Hmmm..........I tend to be more of a jumping and cross-country fan

Pure epee, baby!! It's the only weapon!
The clear-mask thing was a debate when I was fencing, too, and everybody in the club (including me) thought it was just the cheesiest, most awful idea ever. Times change, I guess. From what I understand, most of the original games (back in Greece) were done in the nude!!

Good on you!

I enjoyed epee a lot, I still wish I could have continued it. We had a Russian teacher; he was hilarious.

Glad to know there's a whole contingent of us out there
