My favourite would be the Russian giant, Collosus, or possibly Hawkeye, or The Cat (from Spiderman), I do like Gambit as well...

What about Listerine? the action hero for your gums? Forgive me...
Personnally, Gambit and Night Crawler are two of the best super heroes affiliated with the X-men. Aside from that, Spawn is by far the best. He is the complete oppsite of the cliche superhero, and it is just something thats refreshing in the comic book world.

Anyone remember the 'Watchmen' comic book series?
The characters in that were my favorites, if only for their all too human frailties. That and the rather 'dark' way the nature of super-heroes was tackled.
For those that dont know it, the opening lines are ...
Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire thread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face.
The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown.
The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"...
... and I'll look down, and whisper "No."
It continues to cheer you up no end in the ensuing 12 or so following chapters.

Its the opening lines of a diary from one of the main characters,who is a super-hero, called Roscharch (spelling? Like the guy the blot tests are named after)
He fights crime and so on but basically is pretty psychotic. There are other crime fighters in the group (the watchmen) each of who has their own specific problems. Roscharch is one of the good-guys in terms that he fights crime. His methods and general outlook are somewhat questionable.
All the 'good' guys in the series can be seen as being erm well not evil but basically human and doing bad things, but for what they see as the ultimate good, the distinction between right and wrong is not tackled in the super-hero black and white sort of way. Its all a bit shades of grey.
On a lighter note, one of the chaps, NightOwl I believe, in the series discovers that he's impotent. Unless he's wearing his Night-Owl costume during the act.
Basically I wouldnt really recommend this series for kids.

Ignaz the Brickstone thrower I think I read a Watchman album long ago...do they have a dark, underground style more resembling the US and UK avant guarde style of drawing rather than the glossy and colourful classic comics? If it's the same, Rorschach had costumes with different ink-blot patternsposted by Bruide

Spawn is the epitomy of tortured heroes. The guy has beaten with the short end of the stick so many times, he no longer knows how to deal with it. From being betrayed, to making a twisted deal with the devil, to be hunted by heaven, this guy has seen it all. The whole fact that he is the anti-hero, is anything, is enough of a selling point for me. Also, the fact he is willing to do what he needs to in order to defeat the bad guy, even if it means stepping over someone else to do it. He's the kind of hero were the ends justify the means, and that is just refreshing to see after all these polished good guy superheroes...

I voted Wolverine, but Gambit would have to be a close second. If you include Anime, Gene Starwin (sp?) from Outlaw Star would be best IMO.
