Wow, it's impressive!
Now I'm considering grabbibg BG1 as a serious option but I'm already spending a LOT of time in Faerun so ...maybe later :)

Maybe it would be interesting to put down the party I'm wandering about Athkatla with:
1) Aquinos del Grande - dwarf fighter, chaotic good, specialized with 2H sword
2) Keldorn - I like this guy but sometimes he's more catholic than the pope! What the heck was in his mind when he asked me to let Viconia burn? Oh, but of course, I forgot he's an inquisitor :D
3) Minsc & Boo - the invincible crusaders
:) Surely one of the reasons I keep on playing on and on; they are the salt and pepper, heh. Investigating Minsc's past and coroborating random pieces of information I deduced Minsc is Ukrainian: he's coming far from the east, his colors are blue-yellow (national flag of Ukrain), Minsk is the capital of Ukrain.
4) Jaheira - I don't like her much; since I ain't got a better alternative...
5) Anomen - big mouth, kinda impulsive, I tollerate him though.
6) De'Arnise girl - it's my favourite (Jeez, I forgot her name!); Everyone says she's naive. She's also very sensitive and makes me feel responsible for her security. Long story short I'm her protector so keep your hands off her! ( ;) )

If memory serves me well, I noticed:
a) I can't use Anomen's special abilities (the button is greyed out);
b) I can't specialize some characters in weaponry; I know that spellcasters have restrictions but not even Minsc was able to specialize himself (let alone Boo... :p )
c) I have no ideea what 'cheese' mean; in this context of course
d) mixing good and evil chars results into a disaster (is there any posibility to make Aerie and the evil dwarf get along?)

All the best from
Derrin

@Derrin: Minsk is not Ukrainian, Minsk is the capital of Belorussia ( believe me, I'm originally from Ukraine :) ). To answer your original question, when I was resting in Red dragon's lair I had some shadows and skeleton warriors interupt my sleep over and over. So if you want to make some experience, you can do it by killing them (not that I did it :) )

I can't possibly understand how could I have said Minsk is capital of Ukrain. Of course it's Kyiv (BTW, my favourite football player, Cernat, plays for Dynamo Kyiv). Terrible confusion...doh.
Thank you for the hint, I'll surely go there but later cuz now I'm too weak. :p

a) you probably don't have any spells memorized...you need to click on a spell in his spell book, this will put a faded out version of the icon in one of his slots, then rest to memorize it...

b) minsc can specialize in weapons...not every level up will give you a chance to add weapon proficiency points...

c) cheese is exploiting the game engine to do things or have abilities far beyond what the normal game allows...for example, if you use a ring of invisibility, or any other once a day item, and stick it into a bag of holding or gem bag, and remove it, it is fully recharged once again...

(Of course I would personally never ever use cheese ever in my games...     )

d)well, it is possible to have aerie and korgan in the same party...

http://forums.fwstudios.net/index.php?

go here, look for the link to wes weimer's mods, then download ease of use...the happy patch should prevent conflicts...

or if you feel like using shadowkeeper, setting "korganaeriegrump" to 0 several times during soa will prevent the conflict...its not an issue in tob...

a) if it was the spell button you meant this is correct if it was the special ability button then not all chars have special abileties...... all the characters in your party EXCEPT anomen have special abilities....

B) minsk can max have two "stars" in any weapon style...

Posted: Wed Sep 17, 2003 1:33 am
by UserUnfriendly
right...both ano and aerie lack special innate abilities...however if they cast spell sequencer(ano via potionswap) or aerie uses shapeshift, they will have the special abilites light up, until the sequencer or trigger or shapeshift is done...

minsc can have two stars, "specialized" in any weapon, 3 stars for dual wield...

Oh, so Anomen doesn't have special abilities...too bad
And to make things worse it seems I can't make Minsc the lethal Robin Hood I dreamed at... In this case taking the halfling fighter girl (Mazzy be her name methink...) into my party might be a good choice

I'm not into mods, I'd prefer a clean game to the end. Is it recomandable to use mods?

Mods

I wouldn't use any mods or hacks first time through, except:
1) If you don't have ToB you probably want at least the Baldurdash Bug fix patch Here
2) Possibly the bonus merchants Next door

Minsc is pretty good with the bow, but he really shines in close up melee. He will get a new weapon proficiency star every 3 levels (9,12,15, etc.) But, if you prefer Mazzy, it's cool.

Everyone WILL get special abilities if you stick it out through ToB. Some pretty cool ones, too.

I note you don't have a real thief - Nalia has rather limited thieving skills and they aren't about to get better anytime soon. For a first time play through, you may wish to recruit one of the two rogues available to you. If not, you can probably be ok, but have Anomen & Jaheira load up on sense traps ;)

Nephtu you pour salt on my wounds! :p
Not having a real thief is very difficult. But you know what I always do? I send Nalia as an avangarde to detect the traps (it works fine, until now), and when she can't open a stubborn chest, I use spells. Anyway, I wouldn't take a professional thief with me because...a) there's no one available; b) I don't trust thieves' capabilities as being very helpful in the battles (I know, they backstab and set traps but still...) and c) Mmm...I'll take Jan into consideration; is he a thief? I didn't pay much attention to him.

PS: I have ToB installed
PPS: I suspect I'll use mods and stuff only after finishing the current game...

Edit: Minsc uses a jewel of a bow, 'found' at De'Arnise headquarters :)

Plus Jan offers much fun (imo) interparty dialog, plus he made one quest around Trademeet very easy :D .

Well..

Jan is not only a thief (well, illusionist/thief), he's arguably the best NPC in the vanilla game, especially later on, as well as being far and away the funniest NPC ever. Oh, and he comes with some insanely good starting gear - just about artifact grade. He only misses out on three really useful spells - skull trap, animate dead, and Abi-Dalzim.

Yoshimo is also a thief, and the only single class rogue NPC in the game. The special traps become annoying later on, but he does have some cheesy opportunities.

Thieves bring a lot to a party - high lore, backstabs, traps, stealth, pick pocket, find & disarm traps, detect illusions, etc. - I do tend to think you should have one for the first play through, unless you just really don't want one.

I think your decision NOT to mod the game first time through is an excellent one - you may still want the ToB bug fix patch from Baldurdash Here - it isn't a cheat at all, but corrects some annoying minor problems still unresolved by Bioware.

Good luck & have fun!

OK but now what am I gonna do? Give up Nalia? It's obviously the only choice left since you say there are difficult traps later on in the game (I figured that out myself, it's logical, but I thought I would be able to manage somehow...) Farewell, Nalia...*sigh*
About Yoshimo, well, I just put him aside 'cause I know he's not available anymore in ToB...

Thank you all, you're the best :)

PS: What does "vanilla game" mean? Something like a light version perhaps?
PPS: I'm said that Adventurer's Mart would renew the stock once a game (I don't remember exactly). What exactly is that supposed to mean please?

Usually the "vanilla game" refers to the game without any of the mods.

Spoiler (Highlight to read):

There comes a point in the game where your character will leave Athkatla, go to the asylum, maybe other places, and then the underdark. When you return from the Underdark, the mart will be restocked.

Other choices...

Nalia isn' the only one you can boot, should you decide to do so - given that your main is a fighter, you can boot any one of Anomen / Jaheira / Keldorn without gross problems. They all have strengths, but none is indispensible.

Of course, you can play through without a rogue if you like, it's just a bit harder. Even fairly lame parties can do fine - my first one was me (Wizard Slayer, GM longswords, no dual wield or missile weapon skills  ) Jaheira / Minsc / Yoshimo / Nalia / Aerie & we did fine or, well, we won at least ;)

Have fun!

Thank you, Sker :) I haven't read the spoiler (yet ;) ), err...is there any other way to find out what's goin' on with the Adventurer's Mart mistery?

Should I boot Anomen? I dunno...He's a good priest and I got used with his spells...
Should I boot Keldorn? Oh, my! Who's gonna wield that hellish fire burning crossbow then? :)
Should I boot Jaheira then? I'd miss her "For the fallen!" and "Nature takes the life she gave!" warcries :p
Oof, might be Nalia cute but she's not vital.
Thank you so much for that link, Nephtu

Derrin/ Aquinos

PS: Sometimes I wish I were a sorcerer. You wouldn't even need to rest for getting your spells prepared. Tempting

maybe get rid of jaheira cuz she really does suck. she pisses me off with that khalid crap. besides her wisdom is crap and so is anomen (but when anomen gets 16 wisdom :d from passing the order he's quite good)

well i have a suggestion 4 a gr8 party

PC : Assassin, Elf (elf has best thief abilties) neutral algiment
Keldorn
Mazzy
Anomen
Aerie
Nalia / Imoen

well see u would have a good thief and X7 backstab thats great ( I ONCE SAW MY ASSASSIN 1 DO 180 DMG

Keldorn has the true sight ability and u can get some good crossbows
Mazzy is just some short prick with an attutide but shes funny so thats y i keep her
Anomen is crap till he gets 16 wisdom
Aerie is i guess ok if u give her healing spells 4 cleric and summoning spells 4 mage
Nalia/imoen bothhave thieving abilties but personally get imoen back because she has better stats than nalia
better in DEX, i think CONS, INT, WIS , CHR

s
p
o
i
l
e
r

o and the best place 4 exp is in waukeens promande ( go 2 that 7 vales inn and go upstairs) get that bastard of a dwarf 2 get angry and attack u)

But have all ur party downstairs in a defendive posistion with heaps of summoned animals n magic missles available

in bridge district investigate the tanner- go talk 2 him then that beggar near midd of map. after go 2 the mercant in mid of map near that inn and ask him for 3 samples of berries n treebark and go talk 2 this courtesan somewher near the inn

go bak 2 the tanner place n confromt him with the evidence ( i remember i got 20 000 exp 4 that

somehow i kept doin it again without threatning him and i kept geting 20 000 xp so its worth a try :D

the sewers in the temple district wher keldorn is theres some nice XP and items

Temple quests u can do
keldorn quest with his wife
circuis quest

Also Trademeet is definley the BEST place

kill the djinis in the tent south east at the bottom of the map (get scimitar +2
u get 8000 gold plus good shield
then solve the druid grove

p.s

if u wanna go 2 trademeet go 2 city gates and talk 2 the peasent in midd of map

sorry if theres typos i had 2 rush this :D
hope this all helps

ZOOT sounds like he's got something good going. Still, some things I have to say:

1) I think Imoen and Nalia are equal in Dex and Int. Otherwise, you are correct.

2) If the manual is correct, I thought that Gnomes and Halflings get better thief stat bonuses than elves. Mostly, I remember Elves getting a +10 bonus to Move Silently, +5 to Hide in Shadows, a -5 penaltyto Open Locks, and +15 to Pick Pockets. If the manual is incorrect, than so am I. :o

3) Yeah, anybody can kill the Trademeet Genies, but isn't there a bigger Exp. award for helping them out in order to make them leave? I'm thinking back on this, and this is nothing personal, okay? ;)

Mmm...I have a dwarf fighter and I'm in the Chapter3 and now you tell me I should have choosen an elf...this is discouraging :) just kiddin' 'course
I choosed a dwarf because it's said to be magic resistant (more or less) and because I fear wizards more than anything else and I hate them with all my heart. I didn't check the manual because I don't have patience to do that sort of things but at least the dwarf's description said so.
Elemental ZOOT, the Assasin you talked about picked my interest, maybe I'll reconsider my options ;) Now really, x7 bacstab sounds fantastic
As a matter of fact my disconsideration for thieves was coming from my previous game experience when Yoshimo disappointed to me badly
Anyway I decided to keep Nalia and see what happens. What will be, will be
