What worries me is the damage you have to do if you want to kill a god. Death spells and other instant destroy spells (except those without saves) won't work since they allways roll a 20.

That's why I said you should use the Holy Word type spells. They kill anything of a certain alignment if its HD are 10 or more less than your caster level. With NO SAVE. Hence the importance of getting all the Orange Ioun Stones.

Not only the god him\herself, you also have too count on the god's armies and avatars and worshippers, etc. Besides, gods do have alliances, f.ex. if you want to kill Pelor, you can count on meetong Heironeus or St.Cuthbert's armies as well. All in all, the only way too kill a god is to be a god yourself, abd the only way to become a god strong enough is too be part of the Creation of a new world or something. Remember Vecna is a Lesser God.
But really, this is a very unserious discussion.

Go back to my first post and replace every instance of "wizard" with "cleric"
(Aside, Holy Word is supposedly balanced for it's level, so a DM would probably allow a wizard to research it.)

Either way, if I were a DM, and one of my players wanted to rise to godhood, I would say something like this: "Okay, but you must get all your ability stats to 22+, you must have a certian amount of followers, and you must have done something really big and important business for the domain you want to be connected to. Maybe you have to be granted a blessing by the god\godess who are supreme in that field." F.ex. your wizard would have to be blessed by Mystra, because she is the supreme Godess of Magic.
Something like that. hehe

22+ fair enough. something important??? like researching new spells, rituals, items, keeping safe artifacts and other important works of the art and protecting, sponsoring and leading academies???
If u mean something like that consider it done.
u mean like a lesser god strongly allied with Mystra?no prombem!
THe motivation here is not the power,it is knowledge. i want to know everything about the Art and the only way to do this is to bacome a god with the magic domain. i think...
I wish u were my DM then

Actually I think that Rob-Hin was thinking more along the lines of Tchazzar's way to godhood (he mentioned him so...).
The short story of Tchazzar's way is:
Tchazzar was a charismatic war hero of Chessenta who united various city states to form a nation. He was known to do everything to the extreme, and some of his feast are becoming a legend of it own. His reign was long and by some are considered a golden age of Chessenta. In 1018 DR (current year is 1373 DR) he ride out alone to face a army of sahaugin bading his army to "feast and take ease, while he sharpen his sword" and was never seen again except in various visions of him standing atop of pile of dead sahaugin bloody sword in hand. He was never seen again and his body was never found, and his kingdom fell in less then a decade resulting in widespread destruction and civil war, consequences of which are still felt in Chessenta. In time some people begin to revere "The Great Red Dragon" (Tchazzar's battle standard) as a deity. Many people in Chessenta worship him and belive that he will return one day and bringing a new golden age to their torn county.
Keep in mind that Tchazzar was in reality a Red Dragon and that his way took century or two but...

From Lost Empires of Faerun:
Tchazzar
Alighnment: CE
Domains: Scalykind, Strength, War
Portfolios: Battle, Chessenta, Strength, Victory
Weapon: Longsword
It did not said what level of deity he was, but I'd say he was Demigod.
So yes, he did become god, but his tenure was rather short because soon after his ascension he was attacked and killed by Tiamat who subsumed Chessenta as part of her portfolio.

all i can say is. IF the DM decides you can kill a god, you can....
how you do it is another problem. wasn't there a sword which could be used to kill gods? have heard of one once.
