Lobster? But who really wants to spend all their time defenestrating a hard-shelled thing just to get at a little content? I'm a big seafood fan, but it seems to require a great deal of effort. Reminds me of Grunt's comments about eating live insects in Somalia. Well, not entirely, but both are an honor whose rewards I'd just as soon forego. :)

Ah, but lobster (and crab, for that matter) is absolutely delicious. ;)

Bah. Lobster aint that grand.. chewy steak wanna be buttery crap. Thing I dont catch about great foods is when great foods need stuff added to them aka Butter for dipping your lobster... for flavor?

You cut me off the side of a good angus and just grill the bastard with fire. I'll eat like a king.

Yes I eat meat but with a bad consciences.

I think it is morally wrong to raise and kill animals for their meat – but I find it almost impossible not to eat it. When I have a vegetarian meal I don’t feel really … what’s the word, sated(?).

So I live in the hope that they can grow meat in vats and I can tuck into a steak with a clean conscience.

I have a portion a day, of meat that is. I've cut back greatly because I was growing man breasts and love handles...

Well I find meat a necessary part of my diet otherwise I'd become a wussy vegetarian with no strength and brittle bones. Me big man, strong bones, eat meat, no need vegetable, hear me roar *ahem* Yeah, so, I usually have meat with a main meal at night and occasionally a bit of bacon in the morning.

I don't really have much of an opinion on the moral issues of eating meat, I think it has its pros and cons...*ouch* damn that fence.

Does meat protein has some quality which adds strength to human bones and sinews, unlike other food proteins?

I don't know, I was being silly :o

Although to be serious, apparently it is important to eat meat when one is growing, parents are encouraged to feed meat to their families. However once the growing stage finished meat is less important to the diet.

One can get protien from many other sources, meat isn't necessary. Meat is a very good provider of iron and other necessary minerals but it can also be harmful because it features toxins that damage the body.

All of the above is hear say I have picked up over the years, as far as I know it's all true but then due to the ever-changing rules and regulations on diets it could all be untrue in the current climate.

(excuse the appaling grammar and spelling :o )

I eat everything and I'm always hungry, either I metabolise nutrition too fast or I have some deficit in nutrition uptake. I have tried to eat lacto vegetarian but I started to loose hair and weight in a few months so I quit that and I am not willing to try again since I do value my health a lot. However, I have no health concerns regarding my food, I eat a lot of meat, red or white, and a lot of fruit. I also eat quite fatty food sometimes. Not so much carbohydrates, I ate much more of that when I was younger at exercised 20 h/week (it's mainly when you exercise a lot that you need much carbohydrates). In short, I eat what is called "paleolithic diet", and obviously it's good for me 'cause I have a very low blood pressure and I'm very low on cholesterol. :)

I understand your position, however I do not have a bad conscience for being an omnivore, I do however think the meat industry, or rather the animal breeding industry in general, is unethical. We humans raise and kill animals for their meat, their skin, their fur and other products. We also - and this is what I find most unnecessary in terms of suffering - raise animals to test cosmetic products on them. We also keep animals in captivity as pets, indoors, in habitats and circumstances that are cleraly unnatural to them. And not only that, we breed new races of animals, that are malfunctioning and suffer from the beginning, in order to harvest more meat from them or make them more suitable or attractive as expensive pets. Where to start?

Personally I think that one can go 2 ways: either one decides what is an ethical way to treat other species and try to stick to that. Or, if that is very difficult as in your case, try to decide how to reduce your consumption of animal products as much as possible, and try to make a ranking in what products include the most suffering for the animal. For instance, maybe you can't refrain from eating meat without getting health problems yourself but maybe you can reduce you animal consumption in other ways (quit buying soap, schampoo etc that contain substances tested on animals, quit using leather jackets and shoes, etc) or choose to consume species that are thought to have narrow consciousness and few nociceptors (pain-receptors)? Insects contain the same amount of proteins per gram as meat from a cow, for instance.

Let's hope for cloning of muscle tissue for food purposes in the future :D

As I have stated elsewhere, I am an omnivore with strong carnivorous tendencies. In fact, I am dedicated to the ideal of being the best ominvore with carnivorus leanings as I can possibly be. Steak? Consider it history; I prefer the "cowboy cut" popular here in Texas. Over 20 ounces of Grade A beef. Hoo-ah! :D

Pork? I love it, though I'm a little more cautious in this area as some swine are reared and fed in questionable conditions. Cook it thoroughly I say; tastes great when slow-cooked and smoked, and marinated in a molasses-based barbeque sauce.

Chicken...southern fried and dripping with grease, please. ;) Considering that at 33, I have the cholesterol count of a child, my metabolism is able to process fats and such with great aplomb. If my metabolism wasn't so efficient at handling things that give most people hardened arteries and coronaries, I would probably stay away from fried meats. ;)

Fish: food of the gods. :D I can't get enough of it, and it's very healthy as well.

I don't eat a great deal of meat, but for no political reason. It is funny, I feel a meal incomplete without meat, yet when I have pizza or pasta (my staple diet) I always have vegetarian sauces by choice, meat ruins these dishes for me. I am evil at the deli counter though, I should never shop there hungry! Only rarely do I eat fish.

LOL! The politically-minded stomach is a deprived stomach, indeed. :D ;)

I feel the same way about pasta dishes. Granted, I'll eat a meat-sauce on linguine any day...but pasta is really best served with a strictly vegetarian sauce. I prefer it that way. Of course, let us not forget the wine, madam. Simply a must. :D

One should *only* shop at a deli when they are hungry, I say. :D It makes the experience all the more exciting, really. A sliced roast beef sandwich is more thrilling when one is experiencing hunger pangs. ;)

linguini with red clam sauce and sauteed veggies. Why go any other route.

Unethical or not, I too, am a omnivore with carnivorous tendancies. I try not to think too hard about the potential?? unethical treatment in the harvesting of such animals.

I certainly have no problem toting a rifle, shotgun, or bow and hunting pheasant, turkeys, ducks, and deer. Shoot to kill, clean them up, and make tasty meals. There's nothing like deep frying a 30 lb. wild turkey. Sorry BS, we're not talking bourbon here. :D

As with the mind ;) :D

LMAO! :D Of course! but surely the wine is vegetarian, no? :D

ROFL!! Oh my, I spend so much at the cold meat and pickles counter if I am hungry! :D My problem is I only eat one cooked meal a day - which is usually pasta. The rest of the day I graze, and I don't have a sweet tooth, so the portion of pork pie and Branston pickle, or slice of beef and mustard with bread comes in handy.

Hmmm...never heard of an animal-based wine. In fact, that concept sounds kind of yucky. The process animal matter undergoes while decaying is...well...gross, for lack of a better word.

I eat as much pasta as possible. It is good for the soul, and sticks to the ribs quite admirably. Add to this bread and *real* butter - with copious amounts of pesto and garlic added - and you have a meal that is sure to hit the spot every time. :D

@Ned: Awesome coolness.

My only consideration concerning the treatment of meat animals lies in the effect that this treatment has upon the quality of their meat. As you know, a whitetail deer that is not swiftly and cleanly killed in the hunt will have it's meat affected by the release of certain chemicals by virtue of the fear and survival response as it runs off, mortally wounded.

Have you ever had a meal that included free-range chicken? Chickens that are permitted freedom of movement outdoors, and allowed to supplement their daily diet with insects and anything they can snap their voracious beaks on, are incomparable in flavor. Free-range chicken makes their mass-produced counterparts taste pale in comparison.

Chanak,

Some friends and I just grilled a free range chicken a couple of weeks ago for one of the Minnesota Wild/Anaheim Ducks (we didn't have a duck) hockey playoff games.

We seasoned them up, cut off the top of a can of beer and stuck the rump on the can, grilling it vertical. Most of the beer evaporated and helped keep the bird moist. Amazing, not sure if I can go back to just buying chicken breasts.

Damn. Even more coolness.

I never tried it that way. I keep it in mind. Now I just need to find a source here in town that sells free-range chicken meat. I'll be damned if I'll raise my own again; the things have horrible personal habits. :D

What a horrible thought. A piece of wobbly tissue in a plastic dish? Where is the free range there I ask? And, what species are we talking here - concept seems open to ethical abuse (slip a little human muscle in there..., and the thought of chowing down on mouse muscle just doesn't do it for me. You chatter about slipping human muscle in there to eat reminds of a movie. how ironic you post in post in green.

SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!!!!

The chickens were fantastic.

Regarding the ostrich, I recommend a bigger grill; then you fire up the sawz-all and cut the top of a 16 gallon keg. With the size of those eggs ostriches lay, i'm sure the rump would fit over the keg. :D ;) From what I hear ostrich is tasty, I'd eat it.
