Flame Tongue is also quite useful against Undead. It's easier to get than Daystar in the early stage of the game.

How about the shield of reflection, boot of grounding and the helm of defense?
Or arrows of biting, wand of frost (for pit fiends) and wand of heavens (both 100 charges)?
Or glasses of identification, gem/scroll bags and bag of holding?

Minerva; I would say Daystar is extremely easy to get right away. Simply walk in with your thief, open the chest and get it. Then exit before the lich start throwing offensive spells. Come back to finish him off later on. Still, Flametongue is also a good sword.

Who knows that PALADINS can use several HARPS in the game? For example Harp of Discord? The harp allows a paladin to cast 3 Chaos spells per day (more precisely, from rest to rest). Another harp usable by a paladin is the Methild's Harp (Illithid Lair in the Underdark).

If you have the patch installed, Vhailor's Helm works just fine. If you actually open it up in an item editor, you'll see it has the save vs death enabled. If you disable this it works perfectly every time... but like I said, the patch does this already.
Underated items:
o Definitely glasses of identification! These things were a lifesaver!
o Wand of Cloudkill. Simply get it from the initial dungeon, sell it, and steal it back with 50 charges
o Amulet of Power. This baby saved me from level drain countless times, added some nice magic resistance, decreased spell casting time and added permanent vocalisation

The name rings true! A mighty amulet if there ever was one!
As far as Axes are concerned, well, don't get me started! I still don't know why they haven't got 2-Handed Battle Axes!

Valygar is very spear friendly!

Yeah, but he's also dual-wield-katana-friendly, which wins in my book. CF in one hand and Malakar in the other. Ouch.
I also really like Tansheron's bow. Good weapon for nalia or imoen without worrying about running out of ammo. Speaking of which...
Is anyone as lazy about ammo as I am? I HATE keeping track of arrows, bolts, and bullets. There are so many returning or no-ammo-required missle weapons in the game that I really can't be bothered with anything that actually gets used up. My first time through I really hoarded arrows of piercing, then I just realized they were a pain in my ass to keep track of.

Great bow - btw.
Well, the dual-wield is reserved for my Kensai/mage so Valygar and a good spear is always welcome.

for underappreciated weapons i have to go with Mana Bow +4 longbow. 5-10% mag Resist i think also as for bows the heartseeker +3 is also of high quality as well

Underrated item?, cant tell you how excited I was to get a BAG OF HOLDING, so sick of dropping and rearranging stuff when I get a new item. That and my sweet Ring of the Ram.

Climbing way back up this thread I noticed where someone asked, "Darts,,, who even uses them". The answer to that question would be Jaheria, in my party at least. She has managed 30% of kills with darts of wounding as her favorite weapon. The real advantage is that with 20 healing spells and other protective magic she can still join the fight and do some real damage very quickly (3 attacks per round), and still have lots of time to keep everyone in top shape.
Only problem is that She never has any inventory, is there any way I can get the Ammo Belt from ToB into Soa, or do I need the expansion pack?

Hermit,
I agree on the Darts. Quick and deadly, is how I think of them. I usually give them to my mage as Jaheira is a half-tank, half caster for me, and I have her with one of the strength girdles and the Sling that gives a strength damage bonus. She' wickedbad!!!

Shield of harmony
Immune: Charm, Confusion, domination, hold person, 3 ar rating.
[Maulers arm +2
18 str, +2 weapon
I usualy give both to aerie, and let her cary spar things, and make sure shes in the back, plus when needed she can cast a few spells and jump in the fight.(stone skin, blur, armor of faith, champ of str)
with me its either charm/chaos type things or the instand death things that get me.

Darts: when I've run a party with my kensai/mage, darts were the way to go. He couldn't throw anything else, except axes, and they're so damned heavy it would wrench his arm everytime.

what patch are you referring to for vhailor's helm? i've never used a specific "vhailor's helm patch" and my vhailors helm has worked PERFECTLY. gives me simalcrum EVERYTIME, no problem. there is a helm of death that looks exactly like it.....i think that's the name. it allows you to cast a death spell at enemies. otherwise, the save vs. death never appeared when using my vhailor's helm.

I can't believe no one's mentioned the Dragon's Breath Halbred +4. It does insane amounts elemental/poison damage (which goes through stoneskins and interrupts spell-casting) and can take care of absolutely any enemy who requires some sort of a special killing method. It's worth it to take some proficiency slots in Halbred.
I think this weapon is better than the Impaler spear because the +10 damage you get must first get past your enemy's magic resistance, so the people you want to impale the most are immune.
I definitely agree that the amulet of power is an outstanding item. The best sling, though, is the Sling of Seeking because it lets you use your strength bonuses.
The ultimate unsung killer item, though: Haer'Dalis' Chaos sword. Every hit drains 2 dexterity and it works through stoneskins. EVERYTHING (doesn't matter if it has 800hp) dies in 9 hits or less. (Also very useful in ToB in the hands of a rouge who can "use any item".)

oh yeah....the impaler was definitely one for me, seeing as i always wanted jaheira to use it, yet she was my only shield-wielder. i couldn't make myself lead a party that totally abstained from shields. instead, like mikeheitz?, i equiped her with the strength-damage sling and a girdle of strength. she was a force to be reckoned with.

x-bows in general and kua-toa bolts in paticular.
ever look at the somewhat sick damage you can do w/ a good cross bow?
the giant hair (thanks ribald) has a damage bonus of 5, the bolt does 2d6 + stun (save negates) it's a celestial fury that hit's at range. 7-17 dm not too shabby since they can't hit back.
the other bolts, lighting, biting are also very good, and prob underused
