The problem is that the hardware doesn't always work as desired when using older OS's, such as most videocards. Remember the days of having seperate 3D cards?
Yup. Weren't 3Dfx cards hits back ten?
Of course, such computer can't have latest hardwares. But on the other hand, where would you need the latest and best hardwares when most latest games won't even run on older OS? :D

Very truen but it's not always convenient to have both an old and a new PC, due to lack of space, for example.

True, but if you really want to play both newer and older games properly, then you are forced to have two computers. That's just the way it is. Of course, having two computers doesn't mean you have to have two of everything, as mouse, keyboard, monitor and speakers may as well be used in both comps, depending on comps capabilities and connection possibilities of course.

I just long for the day that we can reliably run Win95/98 under some emulation program. Something like DOSBox, but for old Windows then.

Yeah, that would be awesome, but I see several problems in terms of gaming there. WOrst problem would be the fact that when such thing happens (if it happens), the technology would be so far ahead, that even though you get the old Win9x working under emulator, the older ganes wouldn't work in that computer anymore due the fact that hardwares and softwares are too complicated for those games to handle. Currently, it's still rather easy to get old Dos games to work as for example DirectX hasn't got too complicated yet, excluding the latest version supported by Vista.

You make me feel like I took part in the storming of Rome under Attila, with my Radio Shack 2 under one arm and my cassette loader under the other. "Dark days of gaming?" What the hell is that?

It involved two nuns, a penguin, and three yards of duct tape. For the rest, you're on your own.

I remember that you need some sort of switch to switch between two different computers. Seen a technician use this once many years ago when I sent my computer over for repairs.

Many forms of input switch boxes exists indeed, for mouse, keyboard, screen, sound or what ever.
IMO it is easier to have two of everything :D
