The most interesting RPG locations

Post by JapanKitty »

In this topic I hope to uncover your favourite and most unique RPG locations

One of my favourites would be the frozen jade sea in guild wars - factions

Sigil, the city of doors as seen in planescape:torment. I thought it was pretty special with all the different cultures and of course the different doors.
There might be another, but I just can't think of another one right now.

Lighthouse area in Baldur's Gate

It was a bit tough choice from all those great areas in Baldur's gate I, but definately my one of my favorite places is Lighthouse. I currently live close to sea and I've always like it and this are in BG1 feels really like been in coast. Overall the game has very pleasant feeling of true adventure.

I actually just started to play the game with BGtutu working (BG1 maps in BG2 engine) in 1680x1050 resolution. :D

Here's map of this great area:

Yup, Sigil is definitely up there.

My personal favourite would be Hell's Kitchen in Deus Ex. So many places to be, so many people to meet. And throughout every visit, this distinct newyorkish atmosphere. 'The city's lit up man. Yeah.' :)

Moving on to a more traditional RPG. Baldur's Gate 2 has tons of interesting locales, and they're all so very distinct that it's hard for me to grab a single one. I'm just going to go with the Planar Sphere, which has a bit of everything. Between visiting Hell and a space shippy thing it is indeed a very cool place to be.

Nostalgia time. Playing Betrayal at Krondor when I was.. 14? Solving the riddle chests with an English dictionary and my dad. And suddenly being whisked away to the strange dimention in 'Of Lands Afar', a wasteland where magic had died. Having crystals instead of trees, it looked *quite* different and alien from the rest of the game. A sight to remember.

Oh, I forgot about Deus Ex. Personally, I liked the France area with the guards and the shops... Al thought New york is pretty cool too, reminded me sometimes of 1984 or Fallout with the people dressed in drags but with the robots patrouling the streets. Good times...

Balmora in Morrowind, after you've included several mods, notably Balmora Expansion. The city becomes much larger and more interesting, with extra NPCs of several dozen random professions on the street, lots of additional shops, etc, lights that come on at night, sudden attacks, etc.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

I have to put in another vote for Sigil..
One of the most atmospheric areas I've ever visited in a game

I also like floating beneath Morrowind's water. If you adjust the .ini settings you can make it totally clear, and when you use Abbot's Water Life mod it's almost like snorkeling in the Caribbean.

If I'm allowed to broaden this out ever so slightly... ;)
I'm not sure why this is, but for some reason one game area that left a lasting impression upon me was the observatory in the original Myst.
Maybe it was moving through the stars, maybe it was the accompanying music, but it was always my favourite place in the game

The tropical beach area on the unnamed planet orbiting the same star that the Starforge circles. The place is absolutely gorgeous! I would love to spend my vacation there. Well except for the rakatan... :D

edit: Oh, forgot. For anyone living under a rock for the last half a decade. That's from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Hehe...

Esthar City in Final Fantasy VIII. Liked the futuristic look and the design. ;)
''They say truth is the first casualty of war. But who defines what's true? Truth is just a matter of perspective. The duty of every soldier is to protect the innocent, and sometimes that means preserving the lie of good and evil, that war isn't just natural selection played out on a grand scale. The only truth I found is that the world we live in is a giant tinderbox. All it takes...is someone to light the match" - Captain Price

I have to agree with Prof. Moriarty, the tropical planet circling the Star Forge is fantastic.

For anyone familiar with Dark Messiah of Might and Magic: Elements, the Temple of the Spider is awesomely big and awe-inspiring.
