Jaheira weirdness

Post by Blackraven. »

I have Jaheira in my party and recently she leveled up from level 19 fighter, 14 druid to 20 fighter, 15 druid. The weird thing is the amount of spell slots she got:
5 7th level
4 6th level
3 5th level
1 4th level

I was so shocked! 13 spell slots in one druid level! Is this a bug? Or some obscure rule I don't know about?

I was starting to think it was mistake to bring Jaheira, but now she's significantly better :D . I have no mods btw, only the latest patch.

Not a bug. In Baldur's Gate, the druid spell table does in fact "expand" at level 15.

In pen-n-paper AD&D Second Edition rules, the druid class, and its accompanying tables, are somewhat unique. I don't remember the details, but when they hit certain experience levels, they gain certain titles (Archdruid, or some such), that confer certain benefits, that are hard to translate into a CRPG. I think that the "expanded" amount of spells at level 15 is Bioware's answer to the unique titles and benefits that p-n-p druids receive at higher levels.

When used correctly, Jaheira can kick lots of arse (which is true of most if not all the characters).
Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

As an historical note, in first edition AD&D Druids couldn't advance beyond fourteenth level, and there could only be one Druid in the 'world' of that level. If a character achieved 14th level he/she had to challenge the incumbent to a duel, and the loser would lose a level. IIRC there was also a limit on the number of 13th level druids too, three as I recall. The highest a Druid could go without challenging an incumbent was 12th, a very good point at which to dual class into a mage if you could. Which is what the only druid I ever ran did, darned powerful dude he was.

It was similar with Monks too, I think 17th was the limit, with challenges involved too. My brother in law had a monk who dual classed into a mage, same party as my druid, and not surprisingly his monk/mage could kick my druid/mages derriere!

Ah well, enough of senile reminiscences. :p

Monks, if I recall correctly, could only advance to level 8 without challenging anybody. But yeah, 17 was their limit.

Assassins had a limit as well, I can't remember what it was, but they could go without challenging anyone until they wanted to reach the last level possible (then they had to challenge the Granddaddy of all assassins).

Thanks all! That's really interesting. I like the idea of having an archdruid in my party!

I always take jaheira along, ironskins + insect plague, druid only items are wonderful... her side quest are great too. She still seems mediocre compared to the rest of my party. I'm playing with all the evil characters and they all excel at what they do, jaheira is just kinda there. She was good for my weaker parties, but not these guys. Dunno who else fits in better with an all evil party (class and personality). My character is Figher->Theif. (>50% of kills, uber godchild)

Jaheira is very powerful even before she gets her many druidic spells at lvl 15. For instance, on higher levels not only she has Iron Skins, but also Hardiness + Armor of Faith in order to absorb further damage after her Iron Skins have expired. Also, she's the only one NPC in the original game who can use Harm together with Critical Strike in order to assure that the spell always hits an enemy. In addition to her good fighting skills, she's also a great buffer - she can buff the entire party with the Death Ward(or Protection from Lightning) and Chaotic Commands, even on lower levels, by using the Staff of Arundel and the Wondrous Recall Spell.

Never thought of harm and critical strike! I was focusing more on the druid HLA, I just started adding fighter ones :S. That definitely changes my opinion of her.

My issue with her was that she doesn't compare to a pure class fighter like sarevok or korgan, nor a pure class cleric like viconia. I stick her in the front and she doesn't dish out the same kind of damage, if I leave her back she runs out of high damage spells pretty quick. Viconia takes care of buffing too (but this time through I hardly even had to use buffing, maybe I should turn the difficulty up). But harm/critical strike and all these new spells change things. I'll definitely use her more now.
