To sleep or rest, you have to find an unused bed to do so. Your starting location (the bed in the next room) is one example, and campsites where you've raided and killed all the creatures around it is another. But you cannot sleep in someone else's bed who is still alive.
Be warned though, there is a time limit on how long you have to wait before you can go to sleep again. So if you sleep, get back in the action and have to retreat to get some more resting/healing done, you're gonna have to wait.

Listen up maggots, Mr. Popo's 'bout to teach you the pecking order.
It goes you, the dirt, the worms inside of the dirt, Popo's stool, Kami, then Popo.

You can also find rolls of hay in numerous places and click on them to make a bed. The rolls of hay are moveable; once made into a bed they aren't however. There's also a portable bed (weight = 0) that you can find in old Jeremiah's house. Divine Divinity @ GameBanshee (#18 on the map).
Later in the game you get the option to rent a room in an inn and even buy a house; these can become good places to stash items and leave a teleporter stone for quick resting.
Foods have many different effects; many affect stats temporarily so you may not notice unless you check your character panel. Foods in Divine Divinity. IMO water, bread, and meat are the most useful at the beginning when healing potions may be in short supply. Sometimes I would eat chicken for mana, but eventually potions will replace food.
