Spoil (highlight to read): End Spoil
Spoiler
You lose all your inventory, including the stuff you are wearing, because you have to hand it all over and wear the Robe. You can get it back ok, but it's a bit of a problem to fight with your bare hands and no protection! Unless you happen to be a Mage... Of course, you can pickpocket some of your items back... For myself, I just go in fighting. You have to fight anyway, eventually, so why not right from the start?

Yeah, it's not a matter if you join. You have to in order for the story to progress. Oblivion isn't that kind of game. I think you can attack the guy after conversation (especially if you have on of those unequippable quest weapons), but that doesn't really make any kind of difference. You come out fighting regardless once you're done.

What you talk to the gatekeeper? Wow, I always just blow him away, or chop him into pieces. OK, I did talk to him once, but when he started with the idiotic 'give me all you gear' nonsense the conversation ended abruptly.
If you want to join the Mythic Dawn the only way is to download the Servants of the Dawn mod. You can get it here, you wont be able to join until after the main quest is finished, but it does extend the game and is the best mod I've found so far.

Lol! You're quicker in the uptake than me, galraen! I went through that several times, meekly following orders, and then pickpocketing my stuff back after I realised I'd lose if I didn't. Then the light went on, and since then I've just shot the gatekeeper before he could speak and fought my way through. Much simpler.galraen wrote:What you talk to the gatekeeper? And I've decided that in future, until I've cleared the place, the item stays put; then I'll go back, free the prisoner so he can escape instead of being killed by the MD, THEN take the item. It always bothers me that he usually ends up dying even though I've freed him.

Hmm, I don't think that's possible. There's a gate somewhere to the upper left of the statue that doesn't open until the gate sequence is done and you are revealed. I'm not sure if you can open it before the sequence, or without triggering the sequence. Maybe from the other end of the dungeon, but if memory serves that's one of those 'sliding boulder' doorways. Very practical, that.
So either way the statue crumbles and the prisoner dies, or you have to somehow see to his safety if you didn't kill him yourself. You can always heal him with restoration spells, if you wish.

Tricky's right, unless you're prepared to cheat back (and you need to be on a PC to do so) you can't clear the living quarters (the path out) until the statue has been destroyed.
I say 'cheat back' because preventing the gate from being opened until the statue's destroyed is a cheat in itself.
The real problem with the Argonian is his excessive speed, he's been tweaked to make him faster than the PC. You should be able to overcome the problem by casting calm humanoid on him and getting him to follow you out, but guess what, yep, more cheating by Beth.

Paralyze works on him, though  Doesn't make him happy, but it helps to keep him alive...galraen wrote:You should be able to overcome the problem by casting calm humanoid on him and getting him to follow you out, but guess what, yep, more cheating by Beth.
Can the answer to this question be "No"?

Damn! yeah, now you mention it, one gate closes and the other opens when the statue falls... Ummm... but if I free him and leave the item alone... will the door I came through still be open for him to escape by...? Or does it close when I attack and our beloved enemy escapes? I think it does...
So there is not a lot that I can do differently, is there? Damn. I usually manage to protect him part of the way, then he shoots off and mostly I find his body. Once, he escaped. I think. I didn't find the body, anyway, and I looked.
Some interesting suggestions, though!

I've never had any bother keeping him alive but then I tend to hand over all my stuff and potter along behind the guy to the ceremony rather than wading straight off the bat. Frankly I am appalled at your wanton lack of responsibility!Fljotsdale wrote: So there is not a lot that I can do differently, is there? Damn. I don't start killing until they want me to sacrifice the argonian. Once you've cleared out the majority of the Mythic Dawn in the big room the odd few in the corridors don't pose enough of a challenge to kill the argonian before he gets outside.
I might have a go at wading in this time though...

I might go for the wading approach this time around though.

Odd Moments I've Had Are....
..... what keeps this quest interesting for me.
If you accept membership into the Mythic Dawn, Because you're still in the faction as a member until your cover is broken!
Also, if you give away your stuff and become a member, then you can't make this mistake!:mischief:

By the way, did you folks know that if you keep Jeelius alive, he returns to the Temple of the One, where he works. If you visit him there, he shows his gratitude by training you in something, that is unique, like when the Grey Prince, Baurus, and Quill-Weave show their gratitude.
If you accept membership into the Mythic Dawn,
Spoiler
your rank is, "0 Initiate". If you proceed to sacrifice Jeelius, you're quickly promoted to, "1 Acolyte"! Also if you leave the caverns to go out and about, before Mancar departs, and before the Jeelius bit, when you go into combat you get to shout out the Mythic Dawn's battle cry!
Also, if you give away your stuff and become a member, then you can't make this mistake!
Spoiler
I first took it as a clue that I was meant to play sniper and kill Mancar from high, either with archery gear, or a spell cast. Do it while he is still doing his pep talk of course. When he goes down, run down and grab that book. Loot him while he is unconscious or dead too! (Free Jeelius if you can and the statue tumbles down and kills him maybe anyway.) Then the next think you know, you teleport into the circle in Cloud Ruler Temple, with them bowing before you. You've just skipped several quests and can't give Martin the book now. Proceed to the Imperial City for the big battle there. Martin does his thing. Get your armor as a reward. But then, the next thing you know, you still have a cavern full of angry Mythic Dawn members to deal with! So it isn't as over as you thought. So no matter how tempting it may be, unless you want to experiment with messing up the quest order, don't play sniper and off Manco early!
Shhh! Be very quiet! I may be sleep writing and sleep reading!
