There are different places in the world that stop enemies from following you. These are not natural, visible obstructions, but something invisible that effectively keeps melee enemies from attacking you at all (obviously, enemies with ranged weapons can still attack). One of the more limited (but most common) examples of this would be rocks; if you are standing on (most) rocks, bats cannot attack you (this seems to have no effect on bees).
One of my favorites is in the starting area, just east of the campfire. There is a large rock next to a broken wall. Standing next to the wall, face south (stand on the side with the rock, not the other side where the treasure chest is), and you'll see a tree directly ahead of you - slightly to the right. That's where the invisible wall is. Rats, bats, goblins, and thieves will attack in this area, but will stop just on the other side of the tree. It is a great way to farm experience for the first few levels (make sure you get a ranged weapon from the treasure chest - if you get to close to the invisible wall, the enemies will come through).
I also found one while doing the Brimgulden quest (northeast of a campfire, near a tree), but I haven't been able to find the exact spot again.
Has anyone else found a good invisible wall?
Invisible Walls
I found a wall on the actual road to meet Maura at the Harrow Ruins. It's kindof hard to explain, but if you're running along the road toward the ruins, after the bridge that's on the west, and not mapped. it's toward the beginning of the road, and in between two trees directly on either side of you. Where you are standing, the campfire should be on your right. This wall only works if the enemies are coming at you from the direction of the ruins. I have only had chunnelers stop, but they don't make it through. Hope you can find it!
