backstab questions...

Post by Goldry Bluszco »

Is there a trick to a successful backstab? My typical scenario is sending in my thief (Imoen, playing ToB)) unseen and striking from behind with a ashort sword...seems like I almost always miss. Does it require a dagger? Do I need to click on one of the buttons before the attack to indicate backstab? Thanks.

Imoen can backstab with any melee weapon type she can use, even with staves or longswords. Some enemies (like undead) are immune to backstab. Only weapons which can't be used by thieves aren't suitable for backstab.

I guess your problem is that her thac0 is bad, so she misses even with the +4 backstab bonus if you're unlucky. I recommend buffing her up so she hits better. Casting the strength spell (mage level 2) twice in a row at her will grant her 18/00 strength which grants +3 to hit (and +6 to damage) for a long time. You can also have the party cleric cast "aid" (level 2) at her for another +1 to hit and there are other spells which can improve her thac0 if this isn't enough.

Or you give her a belt of strength, if you can spare one.

In game options, you can activate ' improved feedback.' This will give you detailed records of to-hit rolls in your text window, and it can provide vital information as to why an attack didn't land.
You now bear the awesome responsibility of the Metal "Unit". Gussets of wind, seams like reality, pockets of resistance, the seat of power, and legs as flared as your temper. Polish it well; the onus is now on you.
