How to use spells?

Post by vijji_008 »

Hi I am playing a melee character(level 14) with Daelan red tiger as companion. I have just finished chapter 3 and entered the war ruins in chapter 4. When i read through some of the posts in the forum, i found out that defeating Morag will take lot of spells and you cant use Stone of Recall during the fight. However i have a few levels of sorceror which i have gained by putting a Golden cricket helmet... But i am not sure of how to use the spells... :( .. Is it really impossible to defeat Morag without spells? If that is case, can you please tell me how to use spells? Many Thanks in advance...

1) You can't cast spells without actually putting levels in sorcerer. Spell levels through items doesn't qualify as spellcaster levels.

2) I've defeated Morag without spells several times. Spells just make it a damn lot easier. :p

So you should be able to defeat morag with good enough equipement. Good luck.

Hm... too late a reply?

The item doesn't grant you spellcasting levels, it simply enhances any that you may have. If you have problems defeating her, try evaluating the fight and why you have lost.

Take a look at the message area, pause the game every other second if you must (it's there for this reason amongst others):
- Is she casting disabling spells like stun/confusion? These are usually will save spells that you can help yourself defend against by wearing items that grant bonuses to your will save. Some items give immunity to certain kinds of spells which is a boon if your opponent likes to use them.
- Is she casting a lot of elemental damage spells? If so, which kind does she appear to prefer? Fire? Cold? Do you have items that help reduce damage of this kind? If so, it would be worth considering to wear them.
- Mages and spells often target your fort, reflex and will saves instead of AC, so any armor and shields that grant bonuses to these saves or damage reduction are worth more over incredibly high AC value. Note: Even when spells do require targeting AC, they usually are touch AC, meaning they pretty much check against Dodge bonuses +10 and ignore most other AC sources.
- Take down her spellcasting henchmen (if any) before targetting any "boss". Yes, her spells are more deadly, but more spells piling on you is even worse. Henchmen die much faster in comparison to a named character reducing the number of spells that may be affecting you. Unless of course, their spells are not affecting you much so you can pretty much ignore them and focus on the main problem.
- Greater number of attacks works as good or better than incredibly large damage per hit. Greater damage increases the chance that your hit will cause the spell to fail mid-cast, but more attacks increase the chances of landing a blow at the right time. As mages are expected to have poor saves against this anyway, it would be (from my view) better to have more attacks first, then focus on increasing damage. A drawback against this would be protective spells that deal fixed amount of retributive damage per hit you score, but these are usually far less than what you can deal and considering the HP difference are only a threat if they have the ability to automatically/immediately raise synergistic spells like stoneskin.
- Potions of Heal work better if your HP total is high since they heal you to max instead of a fixed value. Also, do not wait until the last moment to make the most of the potion. Gauge potential damage taken and heal 1-2 rounds before you take the last 15-20 points of damage and then kick the bucket.
- You can teleport before the encounter (some may say it's a little cheating but we take what works, anyway, fate works for a hero in ways mysterious to us all). So stock up on potions and purchase any items you may need before hand.
- In the same vein, you can still choose to swap your henchman if you think that may be the problem. You need a spellcaster? Why not try Boddyknock or Linu? Sneak attack works great against spell casters, especially when someone is providing all the opportunity through working in a flanking pair, so Tommy may be your answer. Monks gain spell resistance at higher levels and have great saves all around to begin with making them very resistant to spells (if not totally immune), so Grimgnaw might be your answer.

Rest up, get your spellcasters who can to cast defensive/protective spells. Stand back and let the melee guys and to their thing before working your way in to assist; it's a team work thing. Remember, you're the main hero, and a henceman's job is to help you, be it take damage or to deal them. Your task if to make use of yours and their ability to see the campaign though to the end.. :)
