Hello.
I was wondering if there is anyway to get Charon to use any other firearm other than his default combat shotgun?
I tried giving him the chinese assault rifle but he doesn't seem to want to equip it.
He upgrades any armor I give him, so that's not a problem.
I just thought there would be some tactical instances when another small gun would be more efficient.
If anyone has had any luck with this, please let me know.
Thanks.

Does he have enough ammo for it? I know that I have to constantly give him ammo because of how much he shoots.

On rare occasions I've seen him use another weapon I've given him, but never consistently. I suspect that when we get into a lengthy firefight, the condition of his combat shotgun drops to 0% and he switches over to his backup weapon. However, since I can't see the combat shotgun in his inventory I don't know for sure if that's what's happening. Or maybe as Cartell said, he's just running out of ammo.
Can the answer to this question be "No"?
Whatever weapon you give him has to have a higher dmg than his default. Supposedly, he will use a Scoped .44 Magnum, Chinese Assault Rifle, Railway Rifle or the Shishkebab over his shotgun. It may be that the Chinese Assault Rifle you've been giving him is not repaired fully enough. Likewise, make sure to give him lots of ammo.

I have Charon as my sidekick and he uses the other guns I've given him. As long as I give him sufficient ammo he'll use the railway rifle, Sydney's Ultra SMG 10mm, or the Terrible shotgun. All the guns do more damage than his combat shotgun, so he'll use them. He wastes tons of ammo, and in the case of the railway rifle, it's a huge problem.
My biggest problem with him is that he can use the power armor without training.

As I know...
#1. All henchmen equipment do not deteriorate in condition regardless if it is their default or any you may give them, regardless of how much they use it. (This makes giving them unique items with no repairable components to them an option over using them yourself - a pity though since you're the main char!)
#2. Henchmen will equip the best armor and weapon -- ranged/melee depending on your request for their preferred combat style. BEST is defined by the henchmen AI, not necessarily what you think is best or simply by DMG displayed for the weapon. They will also switch intelligently between ranged/melee as required; so setting them to melee you will still see them use ranged attacks as they close in and draw their melee weapon.
#3. For ranged weapons, they need ammo. They have unlimited ammo for their default (and ONLY their default) ranged weapon; but any other you want them to use (if they think it better than the default) you need to provide ammo for.

This is not what I have experienced. I've equipped Charon with the Terrible Shotgun, Chinese Assault Rifle (CAR) and Nuka Grenades. He seems to prefer the Terrible Shotgun but occassionally will resort to tossig Nukas, often even when I'm standing next to the target! I check the condition of the two long guns routinely and find that they are in need repairs. So my reality is his weapons do degrade. I've even seen Charon using a more worn out CAR over a better one. In armor he prefers Telsa over anything else I've given him thus far, which is just about everything.shift244 wrote:#1. Apparently your character is the only person in the wasteland who can't use power armor. You can reverse pickpocket power armor onto pretty much every npc in the game and they will equip it without any problems.feenicks007 wrote: My biggest problem with him is that he can use the power armor without training.
