The Grey Griffin Lounge and Coffee House

Post by Waverly »

Hello folks...I'm still fond of my much spammed Fleece and Firkin, but this place is different. You know I love the filth...but only intellectual conversation here please Image

What shall we talk about or debate? @Sleep: this might be the ideal place and time to debate your stance on *gasp* evolution Image Any other ideas...go ahead and get started...

Okay you want an interesting discussion. I'll have one for you.

Everything for humans in defined by a beginning and an ending. This is probably due to the fact that we only live a limited amount of time. I however feel that this limits our reasoning severly. We are unable to grasp concepts as infinite or eternal. Take for example the universe. Some argue that it has no boundaries? But is this truly possible? Doesn't there have to be something beyond???

I am absolutely - and may I add absobleedinglutely - sure that this is another place Waverly invented to flirt around with all those girls (Ubika, Yvonne, Foul, Darkpoet etc.)

But, again, if Waverly show's me ONE single line of "intellectual" ( Image ) discussion in here... I shall shut up and follow the tide Image

OK...Just a quick comment, then I really have to step out for a while.

@Chrissy and Minerva: Surprised at what? Image

@Flagg: 'Infinite' doesn;t really apply to anything outside of mathmetics. In reality even the universe has boundries...the size and mass has even been estimated. It also has a beginning, and presumably an end.

Interestingly, the type of end is related to the mass: too little and it will expand until it is spread so thin that no dense accumulations of matter exist any more. Or if it is too dense, it will snap back and likely end with another 'bang'.

Edit:
@Ubik: I never promised not to flirt here...just not in a vulgar way Image. Ubika, BTW, is completely safe from my charms....

Waverly, saying that there are boundaries implies that there is something beyond. I am well versed with the big bang theory, as it was one of my favorite parts in Physics. Does there really have to be an ending and a beginning??

@Flagg: I think it is possible, though I do not say there is no limit. Since there is no way we can find that out (at least for now anyway), we do not know. And also how we know whether the one in front of you is actually the boundary or not?

It is like brain. You cannot use all of them, and you don't know how much you actually have.

Waverly: Just surprised in general...

I do have a semi-intelligent question... How would you define time?

@Minerva, when I was younger, I could lie awake at nights wondering what there would be beyond the universe. I still whether it is possible for the universe to have boundaries, and for there not be anything beyond. That is actually in a way a scary thought.

Flagg: that's just the human way of measuring time... I can't explain what I mean exactly... I just think time is a funny thing... half a human invention.

That is scary...

If there is a boundary and there is something beyond, then how we think that is a part of something else? I mean, the boundary between county is a boundary, but is not a boundary if you look at countries, or the earth. Same may apply to universe... I think.

And how do I know, especially if the universe is expanding, containing blackholes?

@Chrissy, well we are limited by us being human. I think the best definition, that we as humans can understand and accept, would the sequential happening of things.

Well I think one of the first questions that we need to ask ourselves is: Is there such a thing as nothingness??

Flagg&Minerva: I think the fact that we are limited by being human is one of the reasons we can't grasp infinity. We just think in things that end and begin... That's the way our minds work.

Flagg: It's a bit too human a description for my taste but probably the only that comes remotely close to a correct one... It's the only one I've come up with sofar...

That is a very Buddism question... Image

I think Budda is a person who understand "nothingness"... Nothingness is not zero, because you can count zero. Not empty, either. God created the world out of nothingness, and it will eventually go back to the nothingness. I may be confused here, though...

@Chrissy, I agree with you. It is a very human definition. I am not sure whether I can come up with a different explanation. It is very interesting to understand the limitations that we humans have in our reasoning capabilities.
