HELP!!! SoZ Breaking MotB

Post by TempeDM »

So I got my hands on SoZ for the holidays and was thrilled to have more NWN2 content. I 'fast-as-I-could' installed it and proceeded to game away. While gaming I got the urge to replay the OC and MotB as a straight-through type thing. Come to find out that SoZ broke MotB and now all voice-overs are gone and cutscenes fast forward making them unreadable and the game essentially unplayable. So I go searching for many hours (since the game is already months old the posts were old and buried) and I THINK I found the problem.

Apparently Obsidian developed the following patch to help fix the problem:

nwn2_pcx2_englishvofix_from1201541_to1201541

The problem is that my NWN2 PC is unable to auto patch as it cannot go online.

So I searched about and found the patch on the NWN2 Vault.

So happily I downloaded it only to find it 'corrupted of broken'.
Next step, I search for another source to dl this file from. Unfortunately ever place seems to link back to this file. Next I contact Atari support and get no response.

So now I am left with having to consider uninstalling all of my NWN2 stuff and then re-installing without SoZ (Quite a hassle I would rather avoid) just so I can try playing MotB.

Does anyone know where else I might be able to find this sizeable (325MB) patch to download so I can play my game?

I had an install where the autoupdate would fail due to "file contents not correct" but removing the program and reinstalling with the computer in near-safe mode allowed the update to proceed. Your error sounds similar and I have to recommend that you do the same.
  1. If you have Norton's AV (probably including web security) installed, remove the program from your system following their website advice to TOTALLY remove it before continuing.
  2. remove NWN2
  3. set the computer to reboot with almost nothing running
    • run "msconfig"
    • go to the services tab and disable anything that that is not MANDATORY for your system to operate making sure to keep the windows installer enabled.
    • go to the startup tab and disable anything that is not required for the system to operate.
  4. restart the computer and reinstall NWN2. (if the install doesn't work, go back to msconfig and enable the windows installer service and then restart the system again.)
  5. after the reinstall completes, go back to msconfig and enable only those options that are required to access the internet (HTTP, DNS, network logons, but not "remote" anything) for the autoupdater to run.
  6. after the autoupdater is finished, go back into msconfig and enable all options that you previously disabled and restart the 'puter
Note that in your situation, you have to install the update from a downloaded patch, so I would recommend doing that immediately after installation and before enabling the normal services/startup items but not using a second restart to do so.

I suspect that the patch on NWN Vault is fine, and something just happened while you were downloading it. So before uninstalling anything or doing anything complicated, I'd try downloading it again.

I tried the autoupdate over the course of a number of days from both the ign website and the atari one. Neither one would complete the update.

As soon as I followed the procedures outlined in my post above, I had no problem with the update completing.

Speaking as an experienced tech (software, hardware, Windows, commercial software) - The original install was corrupted and the fix was specific:
  • remove the program experiencing the problem
  • set the computer to load only those components necessary
  • run the install and update using only those components necessary to the install
  • restore the computer to normal operations.
I would be interested in finding out how many of the people complaining about buggy software find an improvement after following these procedures.

BTW - this software is famous for not updating modified program files. IOW if the program files are not what is expected then the update W I L L fail

The problem is that the update wont update.

This software is INFAMOUS for not updating if there are changes made to specific files (can't remember which ones they are off hand, but I would bet the list would include all of the files mentioned while updating). It is SO infamous that they say flat out that if you are going to modify the game files to insert a fix, then you need to backup the files before making that change so that you can restore them before attempting another update.

Unfortunately, the word "changes" can apply equally well to intentional changes by the user and accidental ones made by corruption during the install (possibly while using the toolset as well).
