When to Pursue Prestige Class

Post by trammsrvt »

Hi. I'm still new to this game and have a level up question:

I'm a Bard 1 and Fighter 6. My goal is to have 10 lvls of RDD. Should I start RDD now (I qualify) or get more Fighter lvls?
Is there an optimal time to switch classes, in general?
Can I do RDD now and go back to Fighter later or will that cause problems?

I'm not sure of the implications of switching classes but any guidance would be appreciated.

There is no general rule it depends on the case. I would take RDD now and I would go up to level 10 RDD. The reason is because you get blindfighting at level 5 and you want that soon. But you don't want to take it twice with a fighter feat AND the RDD ability. Also you get +2 INT at 8 which will give you more skills and the earlier you get that the better. Finally RDD 10 is 7/10 possible BAB but with +8 STR you come out ahead on AB. And the natural armor and increased CON is also welcome.

Are you playing the original campaign? That would get you Bard 1 RDD 10 Fighter 6 and you would have 3 more levels to play with. You could add 2 fighter and pick up greater weapon focus? Or pick up 3 bard and then you could cast heroism on yourself which has a long duration.

There is not really a wrong time to pursue a prestige class... but that largely depends on what the level cap is on the game you are playing! In the OC, ASAP is probably the best time to take your Prestige class. I personally would have taken more levels of Bard (tend to get more skill points per level) and less levels of Fighter... cause I love the Ironskin chant (I think you get it at level 8 bard).

In truth though, some combinations of class and prestige class work better than others... for instance... I personally would never multi-class a Bard with a Fighter in NWN2. If you have SoZ installed the Swashbuckler is a better fit...

A ranger also fits together better (using ranged combat style, Dexterity to increase AC) and you don't end up with as many useless class feats... I once made a an awesome build using a Bard and a Barbarian which was a great character (sort of based on the idea of the Skald from BG: SOA). Once you can Ironskin Chant and Frenzy you are an unstoppable killing machine!
Two wrongs don't make a right... but three lefts do!

Thx for the input. I'm running OC and MotB. I only find Tumble, Diplomacy, and Appraise to be useful. I like to hack & slash. The 1 lvl of Bard has been great so far as I have skill points left over to max the areas I want.

However, I only plan 10 lvls of RDD. So not sure whether to move away from Fighter now and come back later.

I recommend

OC:

take the 10 RDD levels now. Then take 3 more fighter levels and pick up Greater Weapon Focus. Get spellcraft and UMD.

MoTB

Depends what feats you already have. If you have power attack or cleave already then build for great cleave and take it to Fighter 14 Frenzied Berserker 5

Feats to get for that build (if possible):

Great Cleave
Weapon Specialization feats: WS GWS EWS
Weapon Focus feats: WF GWF EWF
Epic Prowess
As many Great Strength Feats as possible
Improved Power Attack (2 handed with Frezerker 5 you do +20 damage/hit)
