HotU-going crazy: do not have the relic anymore

ok I am just done talking to the Keeper of Names and she shot me back to the City of Lost Souls. the walkthrough says I need to talk to the reaper, but I do not have the relic any more.... What did I do wrong? I thought you could not sell or put the relic down, correct? please help
