Ok, I've finally got Fallout 1 and I've been messing around a bit with one of the pre-made characters to just get the hang of the game a bit. Now I want to actually start properly and I was wondering if anyone has any tips regarding which stats are most useful, together with abilities etc. For example, is a high combat stat needed (such as Str) or can you get through the game pretty well with a more diplomatic character?
Also, how do you rest in the game and is it important to get the first quest completed within 150 days (in other words, should I focus on that first then explore a bit or is it ok to explore a bit on my way to the next vault)?
Starting a character in Fallout1
The 150 day time limit for the quest applies, it's far longer than needed, but I wouldn't waste time. Most time ist spent for travelling on the overland map, so keep this low.
For resting you've to enter the screen with the note about how much time is left for the main quest and click at the bell IIRC. Resting 6 hours regenerates 1 HP.
As for stats:
I recommend starting with exactly 6 strength. Low carrying capacity is annoying and weapons require minimum strength. If you take more you might regret it and if you take less you might regret it depending on how you play the game.
Perception is useful for ranged combat and for sequence in combat. The combatant with the higher sequence gets a free combat round for attacking. Most enemies have a sequence around 10, so 7 perception is nearly perfect.
Endurance is an important combat stat. Take an even value. I usually take 6.
Charisma is nearly useless. You won't regret taking only 1. The dialogues check for int and the speech skill.
Intelligence is important for dialogues (usually check for 4-6) and and skill points.
Agility is the most important stat in the game because of the action points you get.
Luck is useful for criticals in combat and for getting special encounters. Some useful perks require a minimum of 6.
I recommend taking gifted and fast shot as perks and the following stats:
Str:6
Per:7-8
End:6 or 8
Cha:2
Int:9
Ag:9
Luck:6-8
I'd tag small guns, energy weapons and either lockpick, speech or doctor.

Thanks, thats just the kind of information I was looking for
I wanted a character that could get the best from conversations but at the same time I didn't want to make the game harder if the combat stats were too low. I didn't realise that Charisma is a pretty pointless stat so I'll definately knock that down. The character I'm creating did have 7 charisma so that will free up loads of points to spend elsewhere
What are the melee weapons like? Is ranged combat better than melee in general in Fallout?

Yes, definitely.
If you want to do melee, I'd suggest that you wait until Fallout 2 and pick unarmed. In Fallout 1, ranged weapons are definitely better and more interesting, not to mention that there's much more of them.
Also, don't ditch the non combat skills fully, as some of them can provide interesting alternatives to quests and give you a good amount of extra bits.

“The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially.”
Well, if I recall correctly, there aren't that many melee weapons. The most I've seen are either knives or large hammers or the seldom used energy blade. As for ranged combat being better than melee, yes. Not only because guns deal a lot more damage compared to the above melee weapons I mentioned earlier but also the fact that most of the enemies you encounter are ranged-based.mr_sir wrote:What are the melee weapons like? ''They say truth is the first casualty of war. But who defines what's true? Truth is just a matter of perspective. The duty of every soldier is to protect the innocent, and sometimes that means preserving the lie of good and evil, that war isn't just natural selection played out on a grand scale. The only truth I found is that the world we live in is a giant tinderbox. All it takes...is someone to light the match" - Captain Price
