halfling questions

Post by arryjan »

hi, hope you're all well..

I've got a few questions considering playing a halfling in nwn 2 since I want to make it a ranger character:

1. should I go for the strongheart or lightfoot?or does it not really matter which one of the two I pick(keeping in mind I want an archer type of ranger-not a dual weapon wielding one)

2. how should I spend my skill points whilst making my character?I mean since halflings have a -2 strength penalty and a bonus of 2+ to dexterity.

3. Which companions would be good for a halfling ranger in the party?I was thinking khelgar, elanee, neeshka, sand

1. I'd take Strongheart for the extra feat any day.

2. I'd stick with 12 strength to avoid the 2 point penalty. Start out with at least 16 dexterity and 14 constitution. Having 14 wisdom will allow you to cast all spells without any gear help.

3. No comment, I don't feel it really mattered a lot in the OC with any decent protagonist, but if you have doubts you're pretty much free to switch at any time. They all level along with you.
Sage plays a paladin,
because other classes would be frowned upon for laying their hands on a wounded companion

the extra feat is definitely a good choice.

too much con is probably pointless (it can even stay at 10) and certainly more than 16 dex would be a reasonable choice, if not maxed-out, then almost (and i mean 19).

wisdom might also be unnecessary, especially at the beginning, since the spells are gained late and often prove useless at that point.

some decent int (14) sounds cool since the build is rich on possibilities as far as class skills are concerned.

The combat insight epic feat could prove useful (Int determines Attack modifier, if higher than Strength), though you'd have to get through the non-epic levels without it. Combined with Weapon Finesse (Dex determines Hit modifier, if higher than Strength)and light weapons (which count as normal weapons due to your size) and a light weapon, you would overcome your strength penaly to your race. And you get more skill points to distribute too.

For feats like Cleave you'd still need a minimum of 13 strength though.

good to hear it's going well :)

i tried a halfling once, but their actual size is so disturbingly tiny (in this edition of d&d) that it really spoils the fun even in a crpg with otherwise decent graphics.

they should be bigger than gnomes and not that skinny and..... but this is already off-topic here. ;)

I roleplayed a female wizard halfling once. If I had played this online, I would have written a little bio about having certain insecurities about growing up in the tall people's world. Being fond of a certain Persistent Enlarge spell (or a quest to find a permanence item to be with a loved one) made for an interesting roleplay twist. It brought out the romance arc a bit better too. The female Halfling models are quite beautiful.

Paladins are kind of the 'enhancement effect' type of class, I agree. :)

I'm quite fond of the halflings myself..perhaps because I liked lotr so much..anyway, would anyone recommend a halfling monk?I personally think because of the halfling's high dexterity and quickness(allowing them to dodge a lot of attacks) they'd make great monks, but the only game guide for monks that I found said that they'd make horrible monks due to their size. :(

size only affects wielding large weapons, so it is a non-issue for monks.

I've never tried a halfling monk in NWN2, although I am considering it. However, I did play a halfling monk in the first NWN plus expansions and it was one of my favourite characters, and encountered no problems. If anything, the bonuses due to their size outweighed any negative effects, as most monks go unarmed anyway :)

No, but it is easily the best race for the Assassin class. :mischief:

It's also the best race for the Warlock.

You need a "native" lore skill of 8 BEFORE the class can be selected. This means when you level-up, on the level-up page, that your character already has 8 in lore. (..in other words not an adjusted skill level.)

If you have that then your game is having "difficulties". :p
