Well, my xbox finally crapped out and the 3 year warranty has expired. microsoft says that they are only halfway through the 360's life cycle, so there's no real point in waiting for a new console to be released. that will be about 4 years. There's a slight rumor (again) that the price will be dropped for the holiday season, but i'd rather not wait.
The hard drive on my old 360 still works, so i should be able to buy the 360 arcade (cheapest 360) and use my old hard drive with no problems. Should i do that or just buy an new pro/elite and transfer the data? i do have the data transfer cable somewhere. yes, no, other ideas, or concerns
the only problem i can remember is that sometimes there will be problems with the DLC if you switch consoles.

Problems with DLC can be resolved, since you did buy them and MS knows about the issues. Did the Xbox just die or did you get the three red rings? If you got that, I think my friend managed to replace his for free even though the warranty was already expired, so you can always try. If its just regular wear and tear, then your best bet is to probably just buy a cheap system and use your current hard drive.
Granted, I don't know much about it, since I haven't used my system much and haven't had any problems with it.

If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
When my own unit went down I did a bit of digging on various shops in my area that sell refurbished units and went to the place with the best satisfaction guarantee. My used unit was a fraction of the price of the Arcade and I haven't had a problem with it yet.
If I may ask, what issue came up? I got the E74 error with my original console, and last week I decided to crack the thing open again and attempt to fix it. Sure enough I got it running with just a few cheap bolts and washers, so now I have two operating units.
Also, you probably should check with Microsoft before you scrap the thing. Because of common issues they do extend the warranty to cover various malfunctions.

the red rings. this is an elite 360 and this will be the second time this has happened. if you really think i can get it fixed for free through MS, then i have no problem calling them to beg.
however, i read something today (maybe on your blog?) about how MS has declared that an E## error is equivalent to the reds rings. could you still link me to the video explaining how to fix it - just in case.
your refurbished unit: was it purchased from a local retailer or a local chain? how long was your guarantee? just for my information
