I've never been an MMO gamer. The best online experience I can remember was playing through the original Unreal's singleplayer maps cooperatively with a few other players, not the arena style combat copied from Quake that became so popular later on in the Unreal Tournament series.
We're living in the age of subscription MMO's and single player games that don't receive any media recognition unless they resemble MMO's. I am looking for a good game that I can share with just one other person online. Older games and abandonware are fine. Gameplay has to be geared mostly toward one other player. Not sixteen people, so no inherent 'party' gameplay. Just one. Any suggestions?

Err, actually I would mind. That's too much for me to recollect right now. I tend to like games such as Baldur's Gate and 'good' FPS RPG hybrids such as System Shock. Player 2 however prefers games along the lines of the Sims and Civilization. I was a fan of Civilization during the '90, so we'll probably play that at some point. I just don't think Civil is a very.. social/interactive game, unless both players tend to be at war a lot. We're builders.
Diablo 2 I have never played, but the d&d bit of NWN2 might be too much for Player 2.

Civ is a good game. You could always team up against the AI, who, depending on the difficulty level, are no pushovers. Will take plenty of effort and thought to best them. Incidentally the AI also tend to be homicidal maniacs bent on your destruction, all except Gandhi of course

While I don't think the Icewind Dale series is anywhere near as good as the BG Games, they aren't bad, and they can be fun when played cooperatively. So those might be worth a try if you haven't played them.

FWIW there's another coop thread here.
When I played coop games with a friend a while back, we tried Diablo 2, NWN, and Baldur's Gate. Diablo 2 worked the best. If your friend understands the complexities of the Civ games, then Diablo 2 shouldn't be any problem, and it might even work as an intro to RPGs, if that's something you're looking for.

Diablo 2 it is then. Thank you swcarter and loki for recommending this. DW: sharing D20 games like that.. I don't know. I'll steer clear of it until I find someone in real life who can appreciate its intricacies.
