Romance option for females?

Post by EternalWanderer »

Over the years I've tried and retried baldur's gate, but I never could get into it. I recently reinstalled on a whim, and... lo and behold... I'm loving it.
The only thing I'm not loving so much is Anomen, I keep wanting to bash him on his head with his own mace. :p
I have to admit I'm a sucker for romance in my RPGs, but for the life of me I can't get myself to like Anomen.

Ive been browsing the forums and I've looked up some mods. I downloaded Edwin's romance. I don't like playing evil characters, and think women who fall for bad boys are pretty silly (so I never RP those type of girls) so I'm not sure if it's a good idea to add him to my game though. If he eventually eases up that's fine, but if he's the sort of guy that treats a girl like dirt and keeps expecting her to come back to him he's not my cup of tea. (Han Solo type snark is fine though ;) )

Another option I considered was Xan, I even downloaded the mod, but reading through the readme it sounds as if romance is only available with him if you are an elf? That rules him out then too if that's the case. A big shame, he sounds like a lot of fun to add to the party.

I don't like the sound and look of Kelsey (he seems a bit wishy washy to me).

So are there any other options for a smart, slightly snarky, well-written romance youi'd recommend for a first time BG2 player that doesn't own ToB?
Any help would be much apreciated.

There's a character called Kelsey who is a merchant/sorcerer....as well as a mod to open all romances to everyone.

Not sure about links, should be in one of my sticky threads, near the top.

I here you, what self respecting female bhaal spawn would have anything to do with romancing Anomen! not to say that the three female romances are great either but at least you don't hate your PC for puting up with them. I almost never play as a female PC but I've read that many people enjoy Angelo and Kelsey for that purpose. There are also female characters that will romance your female PC although I've never tried any of these.
:) Once again time to give someone the boot to make room for Coran. LOL :)

Well, first off I would recommend picking yourself up a copy of Baldur's Gate II ToB; it's worth it.

As for mod romances, I've heard good things about Kelsey and Solaufein. Unfortunately, as far as I know, you can't get Solaufein unil the middle of Chapter 5 so you will probably need ToB to get the full depth from the romance.

I'm not really a fan of NPC mods so I can't help more than that, sorry.

Edited for my stupidity.

I generally play neutral to good characters myself, but that being said... I highly recommend the Edwin romance. It is extremely well-written, and quite funny in a number of places. You also have the opportunity to insult him... he actually respects you for it, if done carefully. :D

Xan is good.. though as you might expect.. a bit on the heavy side.

I also really like:
Kivan... the mod plays very naturally, and feels as though it is part of the original game. It's beautifully done.
And, another good one is: Tsujatha

Kelsey is an extremely polished, high quality mod... He's not really my type though. I find him a little anachronistic... and he seems vaguely like a medieval Richie Cunningham... :D However, that is strictly a matter of personal opinion, some people really do like Kelsey, and as I said, the mod itself is very high quality.

I also like Solaufein. However, I'd personally more recommend Kivan, Edwin, Tsujatha or Xan.

Damn.. just noticed you don't have ToB... :(
I strongly suggest getting yourself a copy if you can..

Thanks everyone for posting.

I found the Kelsey mod, but as I said, he didn't sound quite like what I'm looking for, even though I'm sure the mod is of high quality.

the Edwin mod sounds just perfect, exactly what I'm looking for. I love some good banter and snark, it would be nice to have a love interest that can give tit for tat and not take it personally. :D

I also grabbed Solafein, just in case I don't like Edwin for some reason.

Dragon wench, I've owned Baldur's Gate 2 for years now, but never got into it, so I never bought the expansion. I reinstalled on a whim in the hope I'd finally "get it" and something seems to have clicked this time. It was mainly the 2nd Ed rules that confused me I have to admit, I came into PC RPGs late and my first D&D game was Neverwinter's Nights, followed by Icewind Dale 2.
I think I'm finally getting the hang of the 2nd Ed rules though.
So I'll probably end up picking up ToB. I've seen several Baldur's gate boxes with both games and the expansions for a reasonable price, so I might pick one up soon to have the whole saga, and play it through properly from the beginning to the end the next time. :)

Having the widescreen mod also helps, on higher resolution the game looks absolutely amazing, and there are so many quests to do and areas to visit! The NPCs all have their own personallity and regularly comment on things (thank you, banter pack) and it feels so... alive. I'm really loving it so far.
A well-written entertaining romance would just be icing on the cake, so I'll try out Edwin and sola and see how I get on. ;)

Don't forget that alot of these mods require Thrown of Bhaal to work.

Edwin's mod only requires SoA, although there is a ToB component for if you do have ToB, and for Solafein ToB is optional as well, so I should be alright.

I'm half-thinking of starting over from scratch though. at the moment I'm being a sorceress, and adding Edwin (or Sola) will make me a bit mage heavy if I keep Jan as well (and it looks like I will, he's funny). So I might be better off playing a cleric myself. I'll probably keep Minsc as well, but ditch Jaheira, and if I then add Imoen, we'll be low on divine magic and healing. The last slot I'll probably keep as a guest slot for whomever's quest we're on at that time.

The author of the Edwin romance also wrote some very entertaining fan fiction. :D In fact, the Edwin mod is based on her work, so if you want a taste, check below. Obviously, there will be spoilers, so you may just want to click on the parts of "Cards Reshuffled" that cover the sections of the game you already know.
