Diablo II Help please forge!!!

Hi, I can't believe I have to do this all over again, but how on earth do you get your character to use the hammer (quest 3 or 4 not sure at this point) but in Pan ovium the small city) I have gone thru and died twelve times fighting forger and finally got him down 2nd time and have the stone and hammer at the "forge" but everytime I put the stone on it or the hammer or put hammer in hand it either drops to ground, and she says "I can't"...been enjoying it to this part now have to kill him yet again, please what am I doing wrong, have soulstone and hammer, thanxs
